The Medication Technician performs tasks that involve specific services for residents which are supportive and complementary to individual care requirements including but not limited to: assistance with bathing, grooming, dressing, eating, and toileting, conducting activity programs designed for residents’ experiencing dementia; basic medical record documentation, self-administration of medications, assistance to order medications and to maintain all required medication inventory paperwork. The position requires variable scheduled assignments as either fulfilling direct resident care assistant duties or medication technician duties.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Maintains a warm and welcoming environment for residents and coworkers.
- Assists residents with Activities of Daily Living (ADL) in a manner conducive to the residents’ comfort, safety, and dignity; promptly answers call signals; provides support and redirection to residents who have cognitive changes.
- Recognizes and respects the individual resident’s emotional, social, cultural, and religious needs and beliefs; observes and reports changes in the resident’s attitude, appearance, behavior, and physical ability to the Shift Supervisor or Resident Care Coordinator.
- Conducts and assists with recreational activities.
- Communicates effectively and clearly with health care professionals.
- Develops positive relationships with residents, families and visitors while preserving resident privacy.
- Assists with resident re-ordering of medications and medical supplies; Inputs medication orders, and all other areas of documentation in medical records.
- Ensures timely communication to resident’s physician on changes in condition, pertinent observations, concerns (both physical and psychosocial) via phone, electronic or fax.
- Documents any resident concerns, family communications or physician communications in the resident’s clinical chart timely and accurately.
- Assists residents with self-medication dosages and residents’ compliance in taking prescribed medications as per RCFE regulations; ensures residents who receive assistance with medications have an ample supply.
- Follows the “five rights” prior to assisting residents with self-administration.
- Ensures medication cart and back-up storage is neat, clean and organized at all times.
- May initiate requests for emergency services (911) if needed.
- Flexibility and willingness to work evenings or weekends as needed.
Qualifications
- Must be 18 years of age, possess a high school diploma, G.E.D., or equivalent knowledge / experience
- First aid certified and CPR Certified
- Ability to communicate effectively and clearly with physicians, staff, residents, families, visitors, and other health care professionals, both verbal and written in English.
- Certified Nursing Assistant or Medical Assistant certification preferred but not required.
- Flexibility and willingness to work evenings or weekends as needed.
- Able to perform the duties required and must submit an annual health screening report (LIC503).
- Compliance with all OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Act) regulations is required.
- Must be able to properly lift 30 pounds. Physical demands vary from sedentary activities to hands-on resident care, which includes lifting, bending from the waist, stooping, and twisting as conditions warrant.
