What are the responsibilities and job description for the School Nurse position at ACCEPT Education Collaborative?
Position Summary: Works in conjunction with the Nurse Leader to provide skilled nursing care and management of students in ACCEPT’S programs, primarily in Elementary and Transition Programs.
Qualifications Required:
BSN/RN current and in good standing with the MA State Licensing Board
Licensed by DESE as a School Nurse or willing to become licensed within 6 months of employment
2 years of experience working in community health, pediatrics, and/or school nursing
CPR Certified
Experience and knowledge of pediatric g-tubes, diabetes and urostomies
Experience caring for students with mental or behavioral disorders
Cognitive skills as related to the position
Qualifications Desired:
Experience with SNAP documentation
Safety Care Training
Bilingual (Spanish or Portugese)
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
Promote and maintain optimal physical and emotional health of students
Provide emergency care and first aid in cases of injury and sudden illness
Maintain health records and document pertinent information
Maintain confidentiality of student’s medical issues
Review medical records for students
Under the general guidance of the Nurse Leader, develop individualized healthcare plans for students as needed.
Notify parents of illnesses and accidents, which occur during school hours and fill out appropriate accident forms.
Administer medications and treatments per prescriber orders as necessary. Treatments may include but are not limited to: g-tube feedings, blood glucose checks, suctioning and positioning.
Assess and evaluate the students’ health as necessary
Assess pertinent family history and home situation factors
Inform teachers and staff regarding medical issues that may affect them and other students
Counsel students, parents, and school personnel, and plan action for eliminating, minimizing, or accepting health problems.
Follow up on immunization compliance, ensuring all students are up to date with required vaccination
Record and report to the Nurse Leader all student absences
Educate students on health and safety best practices
Keeps up to date and attends all required nursing Professional Development
Nonessential Functions:
Other duties as assigned
Travel with students off campus on field trips and worksites and provide routine/emergency medical care as needed.

Physical Demands and Work Environment:
While performing the duties of this job, the Nurse spends a considerable amount of time walking, bending, stretching, and occasionally assisting in patient transfer. Nurses must guard against back injury when assisting in student lifts and transfers; and must follow proper body mechanics for lifting/moving students. Nurses may face hazards from exposure to chemicals and infectious diseases.
Physical Demands: While performing the duties of the job, employee is required to sit, use hands to type, handle or feel objects, use needles, reach with hands and arms, bend, walk up and down stairs, talk, hear, see, stand for prolonged periods of time, stretch, have visual acuity and fine motor skills, assist in student lifts and transfers, lift up to 50Lbs as well as assist with lifting a young adult, and required to perform physical restraint of a student at times of behavioral escalation; routinely use standard office equipment such as computers, copy machines, fax, phones, shredders and filing cabinets.
Work Environment: This work is performed primarily in a school environment and occasionally community during field trips/worksites as required.
