Job Summary
Position is responsible for providing necessary support for students with occupational therapy treatment to special needs students enrolled in educational programs; providing individual treatment to correct specific areas of sensory-motor integrative dysfunction under the direction of the occupational therapist.
Essential Duties

- Provides occupational therapy services to special needs students as stipulated by the IEP.
- Implements occupational therapy treatment plans and goals for rehabilitative care to improve student functional abilities and enhance their ability to learn.
- Collects data and maintains accurate treatment progress towards goals to help with progress reports and Medicaid billing.
- Attends meetings to review treatment and patient progress; communicates regularly with parents or guardians through conferences and other means to discuss student progress.
- Provides students with individual treatment and group therapy sessions to correct specific areas of sensory motor integrative dysfunction and support deficits with fine motor skills, sensory based needs, and activities of daily living.
- Collaborates and coordinates occupational therapy goals with instruction; collaborates with teachers and assistants to offer creative thinking on ways to provide an environment that is conducive for classroom learning.
- Collaborates and works well with staff, students, and parents.
- Models nondiscriminatory practices in all activities.
- Follows a schedule to ensure services are provided as assigned and in accordance to the student’s treatment plan.
- Maintains professional competency by attending staff development programs, curriculum development meetings, and other professional activities.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Must have graduated from an accredited occupational therapy assistant program.
- Must be licensed or have proper certification as an occupational therapy assistant (COTA) in Virginia.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, parents, and the public.
Working Conditions and Physical Requirements
Must have the ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time; exhibit manual dexterity to dial a telephone and enter data into a computer; see and read a computer screen and printed material with or without vision aids; hear and understand speech at normal classroom levels, outdoors, and on the telephone; speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly in normal classrooms, outdoors, and on the telephone; physical agility to lift up to 25 pounds; and to bend, stoop, sit on the floor, climb stairs, walk, and reach overhead.

Duties are normally performed in a school/classroom environment. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
