Job Title: Administrator – Public Information Officer

Contract Length: 260 days

FLSA Status: Exempt

Department: Human Resources


Job Summary:

The Public Relations Officer is responsible for developing and implementing effective public relations strategies to enhance the image and reputation of Accomack County Public Schools. This position will oversee media relations, community outreach, and internal communications.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Media Relations:
    • Develop and maintain positive relationships with local and regional media outlets.
    • Write and distribute press releases and media advisories.
    • Respond to media inquiries in a timely and professional manner.
    • Coordinate media coverage of school events and activities.
  • Community Outreach:
    • Plan and execute community engagement events and initiatives.
    • Develop and maintain relationships with community organizations and stakeholders.
    • Coordinate with school principals and staff to identify community outreach opportunities.
  • Marketing and Advertising:
    • Develop and implement marketing and advertising campaigns to promote the school district.
    • Create and distribute promotional materials, such as brochures, flyers, and social media content.
    • Manage the school district's website and social media channels.
    • Maintaining a positive, consistent, widespread, and informative social media presence.
  • Internal Communications:
    • Develop and implement internal communication strategies to keep employees informed and engaged.
    • Create and distribute employee newsletters and other internal communications.
    • Coordinate employee recognition programs and events.
  • School Board Meetings:
    • Provide coverage of school board meetings including video recording.
    • Assist in the development of presentations for school board meetings.
  • Crisis Communication:
    • Develop and implement crisis communication plans.
    • Respond to crisis situations in a timely and effective manner.
  • External Communication:
    • Respond to Freedom of Information requests appropriately and within legally prescribed timelines.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in public relations, communications, journalism, or related field.
  • Minimum of five years of experience in public relations or communications is preferred.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Knowledge of graphic design and social media.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.


Working Conditions & Physical Requirements

Must have the ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time; exhibit manual dexterity to dial a telephone, to enter data into a computer; to see and read a computer screen and printed material with or without vision aids; hear and understand speech at normal classroom levels, outdoors and on the telephone; speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly in normal classrooms, outdoors, and on the telephone; physical agility to lift up to 25 pounds; and to bend, stoop, sit on the floor, climb stairs, walk and reach overhead.
