Job Description

Job Title: Superintendent of Schools

Contract Length: 260 days

FLSA Status: Exempt

Summary

To serve as the Chief Executive Officer of Accomack County Public Schools. The Superintendent is responsible for the overall leadership, management, and direction of the school district, ensuring the delivery of high-quality education to all students. The Superintendent works closely with the Senior Leadership Team in the planning and execution of the Accomack County Public Schools’ mission, vision, and goals.

The Superintendent is uniquely empowered to establish and support a culture of instructional excellence for all students. In order for students to become the absolute best versions of themselves, all programs, curricula, schedules, and instructional practices must put the needs of students first. It is the responsibility of the Superintendent to demonstrate uncompromising leadership that reflects this mantra.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive strategic plan for the school district, aligning with the mission and vision of the school board.
  • Oversee the development and implementation of rigorous academic standards and curricula.
  • Establish a proactive accountability and monitoring system wherein best instructional practice is provided in all classrooms and for all students.
  • Ensure an equitable instructional environment wherein all students receive the supports they need in order to be successful.
  • Manage the district's budget, ensuring fiscal responsibility and accountability.
  • Work collaboratively with staff and community leaders in order to provide safe learning and working environments.
  • Allocate human and fiscal resources toward the enhancement of school and student safety.
  • Oversee the recruitment, hiring, and evaluating of school district personnel.
  • Builds consensus among parents, community, and staff relative to the District’s goal of academic achievement, academic agenda and instructional roadmap development and implementation.
  • Monitors educational research, trends, and developments to support school improvement efforts and program development.
  • Monitor student achievement data and implement strategies to improve student outcomes.
  • Provides a system-wide staff development plan to enhance the implementation of the District’s educational and support services agenda.
  • Foster strong relationships with parents, community members, community leaders, and local businesses.
  • Develop and implement district policies and procedures.
  • Respond effectively and collaboratively to crises and emergencies.
  • Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local laws and regulations.

Qualifications, Education and/or Experience

  • Doctorate preferred.
  • Master’s degree in Educational Administration or Curriculum and Instruction from an accredited college/university preferred.
  • Valid Virginia Superintendent's License
  • Extensive and successful experiences as an administrator at the district and school level in a comparable school district is preferred.
  • Thorough understanding of the research related to successful educational practices.
  • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to multi-task.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrates enthusiasm and interpersonal skills needed to relate to district staff, school staff and community.
  • Extensive and successful experience related to program development and implementation.
