Reports directly to the Cell Leader. Organizes, directs, and coordinates all Production Engineering activities related to the assigned Business Unit Cell for the Sumter Plant. Responsibilities for the project and process support duties within assigned manufacturing area to sustain, improve and/or expand plant operations and meet business goals and objectives. Duties require application of engineering principles and practices in broad areas of assignments. Provide capable leadership and motivation to all associates. Effectively implements all activities in compliance with the highest safety, quality, service and total cost objectives of the business at all times. Coordinates activities between plant functional departments, Manufacturing Process Technology and Division R & D as required. Has indirect reporting responsibility to Sr. Engineering Manager.
The Technical Leader will have overall Cell ownership of Engineering to support production, processes, and people included in the respective product line Cell(s) and will support the Cell Core Team to deliver upon SQDCT targets, to eliminate losses in the area through the Corporate Excellence program and to grow the capability of the technical team. This role has responsibility for the technical performance of the designated Cell including setting goals, making decisions, process standard work formulation, and driving accountability toward department objectives. Drives a high sense of urgency for all technical and equipment related issues while overseeing root cause and preventative actions. Ensures compliance with corporate quality systems, policies, procedures, and standard processes, in addition to compliance with all local, state, federal and company safety regulations, policies and procedures. Regular, punctual attendance is an essential job function. Ability to effectively read and write and converse in English. Willing and able to uphold all corporate Values.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Coordinates, plans, develops, and directs the technical team to support and assist the production and quality departments to meet or exceed budgeted goals.
- Responsible for planning, budgeting, forecasting and execution of Cell capital and related expenses. associated requests for funding.
- Assures good engineering practices are employed on all project and/or process assignments and associated equipment in accordance with cGMP standards. Proposes new or modified equipment/processes for compliance with all short- and long-term production requirements.
- Responsible for the development of quantitative and qualitative goals and strategies and the attainment of these goals, both for him/herself and respective subordinates, which is consistent with Plant and Division annual and five-year Strategic Playbooks.
- Design, development, modification and manufacture of production machinery and equipment to improve safety, quality and OEE/costs.
- Oversees Vendor design, coordination, checkout, and acceptance of new manufacturing process machinery. Assists plant project engineering to manage the installation, debug and (IQ, OQ, PQ) validation activities for new production machinery.
- Provides written or on-site technical assistance to the other plants manufacturing similar products as needed.
- Coordinates engineering activity with Maintenance/Manufacturing Technician personnel and Machine Shop Supervision.
- Closely coordinates engineering activities with Division R & D.
- Provides information for Preventative Maintenance, MOD's (Machine Operating Description), ECO's and issues proper documentation for manufacturing.
- Generate CB2s with timely and accurate execution. Establishes capital expense budgets, forecasting, and mid-month updates.
- Aids in all phases of Budget and Standards preparation.
- Supervises and assures the proper use of engineering methods and techniques such as time study, work simplification, systems analysis, and value analysis.
- Promote and evaluate cost reduction, quality improvements and capacity expansion programs/strategies and as appropriate. Determines their economic and technical feasibility.
- Works with plant project engineering to supervises the preparation of all layouts for cost reductions, new products, etc. and maintains up-to-date layouts of plant equipment.
- Proposes and implements changes in plant processes and equipment to increase efficiency and improve overall cost positions. Works closely with Engineering and Manufacturing Management to develop and implement the business/technical strategy for assigned manufacturing area. Includes total responsibility for preparation of design concepts and project submittal papers such as estimates of expenditure, savings, and payback.
- Designs safety and ergonomic comfort into all processes and equipment in accordance with all company, state, and federal regulations.
- Completes and/or supervises the completion of necessary equipment specifications, designs, drawings, etc.
- Applies servant leadership principles and provides functional supervision of other engineers towards attainment of their assignments.
- Oversees the creation of standard work process as well as managing the execution of technical training.
- Coordinates activities to ensure departmental compliance to all Federal, State, Local and Company regulatory requirements. The elements include FDA, EPA, OSHA, ISO, DHEC, EEOC and Company policies relative to the requirements, housekeeping, preventative maintenance, calibration, associate training, and safety.
- Resolves issues for the cell lines in a timely manner, while displaying servant leadership. Manages the team in line with company values. Technical / Leadership
- Assists the Cell Leader in the effective and disciplined TMS (Tiered Management System), cycles for the lines/areas and sets the 24-hour direction for the cell team. Leadership
- Supports continuous improvement activities by participating on CI teams, blitzes, 5S teams, Lean and 6 Sigma initiatives. Identify and drive Cost Improvement Projects to create a project funnel and prioritize resources to meet Cost to Win goals.
- Assists the Cell Leader in the execution and development of CSD (Continuous Skills Development) and Standard Work for all job positions within the Cell structure.
- Supports and ensures focus on the 4Ms E to drive improvement activities.
- Conducts scheduled Quarterly Connects and annual performance evaluations of their direct reports and ensures every individual has an active career development plan in place. Leadership
- Fosters and acquires expertise in facilitating problem solving via the 10 Step DMAIC process and takes an active role in training the entire cell team in this same methodology to drive root cause and corrective/preventative actions. Technical/Leadership
- Spends more than 50% of their time in the Gemba, (on the production floor), overseeing activities within the product line and interacting with all associates to help them with the resources, knowledge, and tools to win every day. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering, or related field with applicable and demonstrated experience.
- Minimum of 5 years or more experience working in a highly automated & large ( 500 person) manufacturing environment preferred.
- Minimum of 5 years as a direct or informal people leader. Direct supervisory experience preferred.
- Minimum of 5 years project management experience required.
