What are the responsibilities and job description for the Lab Accessioner / day shift position at Accu Reference Medical Lab?
Accessioners are our front line in the laboratory. They are indispensable participants at the entry point of specimen testing. Their ability work quickly to identify, label and troubleshoot samples ensures minimal disruption to our high-volume specimen testing processes. The Accessioner unpacks, labels and sorts incoming laboratory specimens. The Accessioner performs basic data entry of patient demographics and test information. The laboratory Accessioner is responsible for sorting and distribution of blood and body fluid specimens to designated departments for analysis.
Duties & Responsibilities:
· Receives specimens from multiple daily deliveries. Properly accession multiple types of specimens including blood, urine, swabs, CSF, synovial fluid, biopsies etc.
· Review, transcribe, and enter demographic and specimen data into the laboratory information system with 100% accuracy.
· Match information on the test requisition with information on the collection vial for accuracy.
· Documents specimen quality issues; takes appropriate action to ensure proper specimen handling, accept and reject specimens based on laboratory standard operating procedures.
· Communicates specimen issues to shift supervisor or designee. Issues can include: compromised specimens, insufficient specimen quantity, inappropriate sample type and mislabeled specimens.
· Receives, verifies, prioritizes and facilitates the delivery of patient specimens and information to the designated laboratory departments or locations.
· Facilitate requested changes from clients or other staff personnel.
· Prepare specimen work lists as needed for tracking purposes.
· Handle hazardous waste management activities in accordance to preset policies, protocols, and regulatory standards.
· Assists with other data entry and clerical functions.
· Ensure proper completion of all work during assigned shift.
· Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements:
Education:
· High School Diploma or equivalent, required.
Experience:
· Prior clinical laboratory experience, preferred.
· Knowledge of laboratory accessioning protocol, preferred.
Skills:
· To receive, sort, pour off and distribute specimens requires visual acuity and manual dexterity.
· Promotes positive co-worker relationships, teamwork and cooperation, both within the department and across departmental lines. Works collaboratively and is respectful of others.
· Must consistently demonstrate high level of attention to detail and focus.
· Able to perform multiple tasks simultaneously.
Physical Requirements:
· Position requires extensive sitting, extensive sitting and routine walking.
· Ability to push/pull up to 35lbs and lift objects of up to 25lbs is occasionally required.
· Some laboratory tests performed are dependent on color determination. Ability to differentiate colors is required to perform these tests.
· Category I risk exposure as defined by OSHA.
