POSITION OVERVIEW:
Acer Tree Company hires Arborist Apprentices who are passionate about expanding their experience and knowledge in the cultivation and management of trees. In this role you will work directly with our certified arborists to deliver quality outcomes to our valued clients, training alongside our team to perform a variety of tasks to help individuals, companies, and governments maintain their trees. These tasks will include, but are not limited to, trimming and pruning trees, removing dead or dying trees and identifying and treating diseased trees. Our Arborist Apprentice role is an entry level position designed to train passionate individuals toward becoming competent in the field of arboriculture and obtaining their ISA Arborist Certification if they wish to do so.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Train under direction of crew leaders and Certified Arborists to perform pre-climb hazard checks on trees, remove trees using felling, climbing, rigging, and/or cranes and making decisions as to which techniques should be utilized, perform crown cleanings, cabling/bracing, crown reductions, tying knots, preparing equipment for use and other similar tasks.
- Assist with general job site productivity and efficiency under direction of Crew Leaders; operating large equipment such as wood chippers and skid steers, assisting climbers with maintenance of ground byproducts, end of day site cleanup, other similar tasks as designated by supervisors.
- Perform basic maintenance on equipment including, chip truck, chipper, skid steer, dump trailer, chainsaws, etc.
- Inspecting climbing and rigging gear for daily use.
- Work towards understanding of A300 guidelines in regard to, Pruning trees and shrubs, Planting and transplanting trees or woody plants, implementing supplemental support systems.
- Train in Aerial Rescue, CPR & First Aid, and on the use of medical equipment provided.
QUALIFICATIONS & PREFERRED ATTRIBUTES:
- Valid driver's license (Class A or B CDL preferred).
- Exceptional willingness to work in a team dynamic.
- Professional demeanor, communication and customer service skills.
- Physically fit, agile and able to lift heavy objects, often exceeding 50 lbs. as well as willingness to learn how to climb trees up to or exceeding 70’
- This is an entry level position. Motivated persons with little to no experience are welcome to apply and appropriate training will be provided. However, the following are preferred;
- Basic knowledge of New England tree species and biology and passion for learning about the field of Arboriculture.
- Ability to prioritize and approach work tasks with high efficiency, a heightened sense of spacial awareness, ability to anticipate needs of colleagues, a positive ‘can-do’ attitude and willingness to assist others until group work is completed.
- Experience or familiarity with large tree removal and various tree maintenance & climbing equipment.
- Knowledge and experience tying knots including but not limited to; Bowline, Bowline on a bight, Running bowline, Alpine, butterfly, Clove hitch, Cow hitch, Shackle hitch, Cleat hitch, Blake’s hitch, Double fisherman’s bend, European Death Knot bend, English Prusik, Kleimheist.
Job Types: Full-time, Part-time
Pay: $22.00 - $28.00 per hour
Expected hours: 20 – 40 per week
