Position Overview

The Dean of Students works with the Principal and Assistant Principal in carrying out the school’s administrative, academic and behavior programs. The Dean of Students understands and responds to the opportunities and challenges presented. The Dean of Students provides proactive leadership to engage all stakeholders in the delivery of programs and services to support the students’ academic achievement, personal and social development. The Dean of Students works cooperatively with the principal, leadership team,Case Manager, Clinicians, office staff, teachers, students and parents towards a positive school climate.

 

We seek an individual who has successful experience in working with culturally diverse families and communities. The selected candidate must demonstrate a commitment to strengthening parent engagement, enforcing and holding high expectations for students and supporting the leadership team with administration, organization and customer service.

 

Core Responsibilities

Area #1: Academic Programming and Academic Partnerships

  • Attend community events and build relationships with existing and new community partners.
  • Develop and facilitate student leadership through, for example, student council as well as other initiatives.
  • Organizes Career days and other one day workshops for students.
  • In collaboration with the Principal/Assistant Principal, take responsibility for updating the school website and social media presence regularly in an effort to engage parents and community stakeholders in our students’ activities.
  • Maintain the school event/program calendar.
  • Plan and execute at least one whole-grade level meeting and other events such as field trip logistics, the Scholastic Book Fair (ES) and other events.
  • Lead and assist teachers with the implementation of classroom, grade-level, and school-wide events (e.g. award ceremonies, celebratory events, etc.).
  • Assist the Principal and Assistant Principal to plan and evaluate school-wide events that focus on student development, school culture, etc.
  • Seek out and secure strong, developmentally appropriate after school programming opportunities for students.
  • Seek out and secure grant opportunities, in consultation with the External Affairs department, that provide support to the school and that are in line with the school’s achievement plan.
  • Own after school programming for students and families.
  • Establish protocols related to the use of the building after school hours, aligned with network policies.
  • Serve as the point of contact for the facility during after school hours (until 6pm), when needed.
  • Serve as the administrator on-site during after school programming, when needed.
  • Ensure network athletic policies and procedures are in place and followed by coaches who access the facility for athletic events, when needed.
  • Partner with the Maintenance team to ensure that facilities requests have been made and to ensure proper set-up of spaces for school events before, during and after school.
  • Take responsibility for requesting and securing security for all school events.
  • Conduct open houses, student tours, and orientations, when needed.

 

Area #2: Student Health and Well-being

  • Acts as the Principal’s designee in administering medication.
  • Supports the Case Manager in managing paperwork related to 504s and Allergies.
  • Supports the Case Manager and Assistant Principal with the execution of drills related to student safety.
  • Communicates with teachers and families; serves as an additional advocate for the students.
  • Provide basic first-aid to students and contact parents as needed.
  • When necessary, attends home visits with the principal.
  • Supports the social emotional initiatives of the school.
  • Establishes, in conjunction with the Dean of Culture announcements and weekly communication to families.
  • If applicable, willing to support enrichment for social emotional instruction.


Area #3: Student Records, Reporting & Office Support

  • Promote and maintain a positive and effective school climate by ensuring that all interactions with staff, students, parents, and the public at large are prompt, efficient, helpful, and friendly.
  • Establish and maintain a professional, cooperative working relationship with all stakeholders including but not limited to parents, students, staff, and neighbors.
  • Responsible for printing and monitoring progress reports, report cards, attendance letters and credit recovery (HS).
  • Responsible for tracking student attendance and work, in conjunction with homeroom teachers to monitor attendance (i.e. tardy to school, attendance and late pick up).
  • Create reports and certificates related to student quarterly awards.
  • Tracks teacher gradebooks, grade completion and verifications.

 

Area #4: Office, School & Student Support

  • Support school-wide supervision duties, including lunchroom coverage and front desk coverage, as needed.
  • Share in main office duties with specific regard to school compliance as directed by the Principal/Assistant Principal.
  • Collaborate as a member of the school leadership team by participating in (at least) weekly meetings.
  • Translate spoken and written materials, when needed.
  • Promotes attitudes, behaviors and skills for improved learning.
  • Works collaboratively with the diverse learning team to support student behavior plans, when needed, in conjunction with the school leadership team.
  • Manages the Office Coordinator.


Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor’s Degree preferred

  • Minimum three years’ school or client-focused nonprofit experience (preferred)
  • Experience working with adolescents and/or families, particularly in traditionally underserved schools and communities (preferred)
  • Bilingual in Spanish and English (strongly preferred)
  • Must hold permanent residency in the United States. 


Physical Demands

Nature of work requires an ability to operate standard business office equipment.  Requires ability to communicate and exchange information, collect, compile and prepare work documents, set-up and maintain work files.  Physically demands require the ability to stand, bend, reach high and low, stoop, and walk around the classroom 60% of the day.  In addition, walking up and down stairs several times a day.  Must be able to lift 15 to 20 pounds for short periods of time and push and pull 15 to 20 lbs. 


Working Conditions

Majority of work performed in a general office environment.  Position requires availability for extended hours plus non-traditional hours required to perform job duties.  Also requires participation and attendance at organization-sponsored events and meetings.
