The Racial Justice Program (RJP) of the ACLU of Massachusetts (ACLUM) is seeking an intern for the summer of 2025. The ACLUM’s Racial Justice Program (RJP) aims to preserve and extend constitutionally guaranteed rights as well as other rights, to segments of the population who have historically been denied those rights on the basis of race, ethnicity or national origin. The intern will work with the Racial Justice Director and a team of civil rights advocates in the ACLUM’s Boston office on a broad range of issues.

The RJP intern will be responsible for research, writing, and policy advocacy work on a host of issues related to racial justice and the inequities facing people of color in the Commonwealth, ACLUM priority advocacy campaigns, including but not limited to access to democracy, reproductive rights, policing, LGBTQ and gender equity, environmental justice and more, all with a lens towards racial equity. 

This internship is a semester long, 10-20-hours a week, opportunity, and will run from June through August 15. Please note: School year interns must earn academic credit for their participation in our internship program. This intern will report to the Racial Justice Director and will work with staff members across ACLUM and the larger ACLU family as assigned. 

This position is based in Boston, MA and eligible for a hybrid work schedule, being in-person an average of three days per week, with the ability to be in the office on any given day as needed and assigned and may require weekend and afterhours work. ACLUM has a Covid-19 vaccine mandate, and candidates receiving a job offer will be required to show proof of being fully vaccinated against COVID-19 prior to commencing employment. Exemptions to this requirement will be considered on a case-by-case basis in accordance with applicable law. Applicants should be aware that fully remote work will not be deemed a reasonable accommodation.

Essential Duties 

  1. Support the development and implementation of ACLUM’s Racial Justice public policy and advocacy campaigns through research and writing, as assigned. 
  2. Communicate with advocates and community members, and attend community meetings and events on ACLUM’s behalf, as applicable. 
  3. Take notes and report back on external and internal ACLUM meetings, as applicable. 

Job Qualifications 

  1. Applicants should be current students who will have completed their first year of college before the internship commences.
  2. The ideal candidate has a burning desire to work diligently to advance civil rights and civil liberties for all people. 
  3. Applicants should demonstrate an interest in and some familiarity with issues related to racial justice and systemic racism. 
  4. Strong research and writing skills are required, as is a commitment to racial and gender justice. 
  5. Comfort communicating within large or small group settings preferred. A sense of humor is welcomed.
