The ACLU of Utah seeks to hire a passionate and experienced full-time HR People & Culture Manager to provide day to day strategic & functional human resource management. At the ACLU of Utah, the HR People & Culture Manager performs all aspects of the organization’s human resource functions & acts as a business partner in aligning workplace practices & performance expectations with the mission and objectives of the organization. 

 

Position Overview & Functions:  

The HR People & Culture Manager works across the organization to lead on workplace culture practices and is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the organization's human resources functions, including employee relations, performance management, recruitment, hiring, compensation and benefits, training and development, ensuring compliance with employment laws, and acting as a bridge between management and employees, strategically aligning HR and management practices with overall organizational values and business goals.  

 

The HR People & Culture Manager must execute their duties with a high degree of emotional intelligence, confidentiality, and collaboration. They are expected to bring critical thinking, strategic, and operational expertise to the team on all people-related matters. The HR People and Culture Manager has an intense passion for supporting great teams and helping them thrive.  

  

The HR People & Culture Manager reports to the Executive Director, and serves as an advisor to the leadership team. This is a full-time, overtime-exempt position, classified as at-will employment.  

  

Primary Responsibilities:  


  • Maintain an open-door policy to cultivate a supportive work environment for all employees; Work with directors and supervisors to continue fostering an environment of inclusion and belonging that values differences and deploy conflict resolution strategies when necessary to address personnel and procedural challenges.  
  • Serve as the point person for management to ensure compliance with internal policy as well as state & federal laws.  Liaise with external legal counsel for employment and labor law questions as directed by the Executive Director. Support the Governance Committee of the Board periodically on organizational governance as it relates to people operations. 
  • Oversee, improve, and manage the employee performance appraisal system that drives high performance, encourages continuous improvement, values employee contributions, and remedies poor performance swiftly.  
  • Maintain HR files and documentation; oversee the administration and compliance of employee record keeping, maintain the organizational charts; retain workforce records; facilitate employment verifications; seek & keep employer credentialing; complete HR-related auditing annually. 
  • Implement employee relations and retention strategies necessary to continue developing a positive employer-employee relationship and build morale; centering on employee wellness and culture, assist the employees in learning about, enrolling in, and encourage use of their benefits; plan regular staff activities (off-sites, team building events, in office events, sporting events, holiday party, etc.). to decompress and connect socially with colleagues and the board; lead culture initiatives to improve morale. 
  • Ensure fair, equitable, and competitive total reward programs and practices for all compensation and benefits programs, including keeping job descriptions current, performing compensation benchmarking, following the compensation plan, conducting staff surveys, recommending appropriate changes, and overseeing benefits administration and renewal.  
  • Assist in time tracking & payroll processing by reviewing hours, auditing time off requests, verifying deductions & contributions, and analyzing reports for discrepancies. 
  • Manage recruitment efforts by facilitating hiring committee processes for open positions, aiding in the hiring process, coordinating interviews with candidates, and managing the ATS.  
  • Facilitate employee training, including: revitalizing the orientation training for new employees; coordinating departmental trainings in collaboration with the leadership team; assessing team training needs to apply and monitor training programs. 
  • Collaborate with the leadership team to assist in workforce planning, succession planning, and identifying professional development programs to retain high-caliber, well-performing staff and to enable team members to grow.  
  • When needed, develop, revise, and recommend HR policies and procedures in compliance with state & federal law that also align with the organizational values for Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging.  

 

Requirements: 

  • Essential: 
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of employment law and compliance requirements, and HR best practices. Demonstrated experience developing and implementing HR policies and programs.  
  • Organized and able to pay meticulous attention to detail on matters that have the potential to impact staff.  
  • Experience as a manager or HR professional managing the performance of others up to and including termination of employment.  
  • An understanding of the principles of Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging especially in an HR context, with a demonstrated ability to value diversity and create inclusion where possible. Experience or willingness to learn about harm reduction strategies and trauma informed practices.  
  • Ability to practice sound judgment and trustworthiness with an advanced ability to maintain absolute confidentiality when necessary, exercising sound independent judgment, and exhibiting high levels of integrity and discretion.  
  • Ability to establish credibility and be decisive while maintaining positive employee relationships in service to the mission.  
  • Ability to influence with diplomacy at all levels with advanced ability to communicate and work effectively and respectfully with staff, board members, volunteers, and the public both orally and in writing. 
  • Ability to work independently as a self-starter with follow through, and the ability to meet deadlines.  
  • Ability to handle and prioritize complex work plans and responsibilities in a fast-paced environment with minimal supervision, while working transparently, with the added ability to adapt as needed. 
  • Ability to be self-aware and culturally competent in diverse settings while staying grounded in a high degree of integrity and transparency.

Salary and Benefits: 

The salary range for this position is between $68,000 and $74,000. Excellent benefits that expand total compensation include:  

  • PTO for vacation & health care leave totaling 24 days annually; 
  • Paid parental leave for new parents;  
  • 13 paid holidays & 2 floating holidays;  
  • 401(k) plan with employer matching contribution up to 5.5% that vests on day 1 of employment;
