Job Description
An Assistant Civil Designer will assist in various phases of planning, proposal preparation, site evaluations, analytical designs, report preparation, specifications, and preparation of construction documentation and environmental plans as part of a project team. The role involves designing various civil underground cabling projects, including site design, land development, roads, storm drainage systems, stormwater management facilities, water and sanitary sewer utility design, sediment and erosion control, traffic control, airports, and facility design for substation and offshore wind projects.
Responsibilities
- Assist in designing various civil underground cabling projects, including site design, land development, roads, storm drainage systems, stormwater management facilities, water and sanitary sewer utility design, sediment and erosion control, and traffic control.
- Assist with a full range of drawing production work, including problem analysis, design layout, and calculations on non-routine assignments of substantial variety and complexity.
- Assist with a variety of civil assignments using prescribed methods and standard techniques, including drawing sequence and presentation, sizing various system components, and refining rough sketches.
- Assist with initial rough designs or sketches and mark-ups on ongoing projects.
- Analyze reports, maps, drawings, tests, and other topographical and geologic data to plan and design projects.
- Interpret and apply design codes and specifications related to design requirements.
- Complete and review design drawings within scope, budget, and schedule.
- Compute volume calculations for excavation, dredging, and upland site grading.
- Incorporate schedules, budgets, and project criteria into civil design and layouts.
- Organize and maintain all revisions of project drawings, plot files, and project-related information in a logical and well-structured manner.
Essential Skills
- Proficiency in AutoCAD Civil 3D with 3 years of experience.
- Experience in underground utilities projects, such as substations, gas, piping, or electrical utility.
- Understanding of planning profiles and dynamic profiles in Civil 3D.
- Basic understanding of design software such as AutoCAD, Civil 3D, MicroStation, and Excel.
- Basic knowledge in design, calculations, and design systems.
- Basic knowledge in the theory and practices of civil discipline and related disciplines.
- Capability to operate related discipline design software necessary to execute production tasks.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- 4 years of progressive detailing and design experience.
- Experience with utility projects including gas, piping, cable, substation, and civil piping.
- Time management skills with the ability to proactively communicate issues.
- Knowledge of site conditions and grading.
- Experience working in drawings that are geo-located.
- Understanding of depths of cables underground and the ability to work with different scales.
Work Environment
The position is on-site at the Wallingford, CT location, working 5 days a week from 8 AM to 5 PM. You will be working on a minimum of three projects at a time, collaborating with one of the largest utilities in the country. This is a full-time, long-term role with a stable and supportive work environment.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $29.00 - $38.00/hr.
