Job Title: Construction Materials Inspector


Job Description

We are seeking Construction Material Technicians to perform testing and inspection services for building construction and infrastructure projects. The role involves performing on-site testing of concrete, soil, aggregates, asphalt, steel, masonry, and more to ensure they meet project specifications. You will document test results and field activities daily, and communicate directly with owners' representatives, project managers, contractors, and other on-site personnel. Candidates must be willing to travel, work a variable schedule including occasional weekends and overnight stays, and be outdoors in the elements for extended periods of time.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct quality control testing at project sites, including concrete, soils, masonry, asphalt, aggregate, and reinforcing steel.
  • Ensure contractor compliance with state specifications, plans, and/or proposals for roadway, drainage, pavement, water works, electrical, maintenance of traffic, pavement markings, signing, topsoil removal, demolition, foundations, sub-grades, guardrails, slope protection, and more.
  • Inspect construction projects to ensure contractor compliance with state specifications, plans, and/or proposals and bridge projects.
  • Verify plan quantities and calculations with as-bid plans, prepare and maintain project records and reports, and perform other duties as assigned by the Project Engineer.
  • Notify the Contractor or the Project Engineer with status updates or about non-conforming work.
  • Prepare and maintain project records and reports, and perform other duties as assigned by the Project Engineer in a timely manner.
  • Some travel required; mostly local but occasional overnight/out-of-state trips are required.
  • Some weekend and overnight work is required.

Essential Skills

  • ODOT pre-qualified construction inspector: ACI Field Testing Technician Grade I / ACI Aggregate Testing Technician Level I, OR Ohio Aggregate Level I
  • Prior ODOT Inspection experience
  • Prior construction inspection experience
  • Relevant degree: Civil Engineering Technology, Construction Engineering Technology, or Construction Management
  • High school diploma
  • Prior construction or manual labor (i.e., landscaping) experience
  • Basic understanding of construction drawings/blueprints
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to write accurate reports
  • Ability to effectively communicate with on-site personnel
  • Willingness to work a variable schedule, including some weekends and overnight work
  • Willingness to work outdoors on job sites year-round
  • Willingness to travel and stay in hotels as required

  • Material testing experience

Work Environment

The work environment involves being almost entirely in the field on various building construction and ODOT job sites. Some travel will be required, including potential out-of-state trips. The schedule will vary week to week based on the contractor's needs. Some weekend and overnight work, especially during concrete pours, will be required. The position requires working outdoors in the elements year-round.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $25.00/hr.
