Job Description
We are seeking an experienced Director of Mechanical Engineering to lead and mentor a team of design engineers and designers. The ideal candidate will oversee large-scale refrigeration projects, ensuring they are completed on time, within scope, and on budget. This role involves working closely with company executives to align the engineering department's goals with overall company objectives, developing strategies to improve department efficiency, and ensuring compliance with safety standards and regulations.
Responsibilities
- Mentor a team of design engineers and designers, setting performance goals, conducting reviews, and fostering professional growth.
- Oversee mechanical design and engineering efforts for large-scale refrigeration projects, ensuring timely and budget-compliant completion.
- Coordinate seamlessly between engineering, field, and shop teams.
- Lead the development of cutting-edge refrigeration technologies and stay updated on industry trends.
- Ensure engineering department’s goals align with overall company objectives.
- Develop and implement strategies to improve department efficiency and project execution.
- Review and approve engineering designs and drawings to meet company quality standards and customer specifications.
- Provide technical guidance and support to the engineering team throughout the design process.
- Continuously evaluate and improve engineering workflows and processes to enhance project quality, efficiency, and safety.
- Proactively identify and manage risks to ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.
- Identify and implement process improvements to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of the engineering division.
- Foster a culture of learning and professional development among engineering staff.
- Develop and maintain engineering schedules that align with project timelines and resource availability.
- Ensure all engineering projects comply with safety standards and regulations.
- Provide high-level technical support to manufacturing and construction teams when addressing complex issues.
- Perform engineering calculations and ensure proper equipment selections for design projects.
- Provide regular updates to executive leadership on project progress, engineering performance, and departmental improvements.
Essential Skills
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience in project management and engineering design.
- A minimum of 7-10 years of experience managing engineering teams in the industrial refrigeration or a related industry.
- Strong technical expertise in mechanical systems, particularly with ammonia and CO2 refrigeration.
- In-depth knowledge of ammonia and CO2 refrigeration systems, safety protocols, and regulatory compliance.
- Proven leadership abilities with experience managing cross-functional teams of engineers.
- Ability to make independent business decisions within budget, seeking guidance only when dealing with exceptionally difficult issues.
- Excellent organizational and documentation skills, with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple ongoing projects simultaneously.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Expertise in ammonia and CO2-based refrigeration systems, with a deep understanding of relevant safety and environmental regulations.
- Professional Engineering License.
- Ability and willingness to travel to construction sites nationwide.
Work Environment
Headquarters located in Lyndhurst. The company has approximately 250 total employees, including 80 engineers and 120 operations staff. The company has doubled in size in the last two years and specializes in designing, fabricating, and installing customized, turn-key industrial refrigeration systems.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $120000.00 - $140000.00/yr.
