Job Title: Field Research Assistant
Job Description
The Field Research Assistant will perform a variety of routine tasks associated with the seed research program. This position requires residency in Kauai. The Research Worker will operate specialty seed preparation equipment, sort and process seed samples for shipment, and use specialized software to track, weigh, and inventory these samples. Additional tasks include preparing and printing row tags, shelling envelopes, maps, planting stakes, and row bands. Seasonal tasks will involve the pollination of corn plants and the harvest of corn ears in line with established research protocols.
Responsibilities
- Operate specialty seed preparation equipment such as the carousel sortation device transfer jig and verifier.
- Sort and process seed samples for shipment.
- Use specialized software to track, weigh, and inventory seed samples.
- Prepare and print row tags, shelling envelopes, maps, planting stakes, and row bands.
- Pollinate corn plants and harvest corn ears according to established research protocols.
- Perform health monitoring or obtain respirator medical clearance if required.
- Use powered tools and machinery including mowers, weed whackers, blowers, power washers, choppers, potting machines, bale shavers, and conveyors.
- Conduct field and shade house tasks such as planting, thinning, weeding, tissue sampling, pollination, transplanting, transpotting, pot or flat filling, plant tagging, seedling rearray, plant cutting, husk back harvest, and pest management activities such as pesticide applications.
- Prepare samples for shipping, including sorting, shelling, weighing, counting, and seed packaging.
- Perform general facility operations tasks including clean-up, organization of samples and supplies, and other routine and non-routine tasks as they arise.
Essential Skills
- Ability to understand and follow both written and oral instructions.
- High school diploma or GED.
- Attention to detail.
- Ability to lift 40lbs and walk on uneven field surfaces for 8 or more hours per shift.
- Ability to work with and around plants and plant pollens.
- Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions for extended periods.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience in farming, agriculture, and harvest.
- Experience with laboratory and seed preparation.
Work Environment
The work environment includes both field and laboratory settings. Workers must be able to work outdoors in various weather conditions for extended periods. Tasks may involve physical labor, including lifting up to 40lbs and walking on uneven field surfaces for 8 or more hours per shift. Health monitoring or respirator medical clearance may be required for certain tasks. Working safely is a condition of employment. Workers will receive general instructions on routine tasks and detailed instructions on new tasks, with hands-on training and skills verification.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $25.00/hr.
