Job Title: Health and Safety Advisor
Job Description
We are seeking a proactive and detail-oriented Health and Safety Advisor to join our team at the early stage of a major tunnel development project. The Health and Safety Advisor will support the HS Leader in developing safety programs and procedures, ensuring compliance with safety regulations, contract requirements, and fostering a culture of safety among all project stakeholders. The ideal candidate has experience in construction safety and HS management systems and good knowledge of industry standards.
Responsibilities
- Support the development and implementation of site-specific safety programs, plans, procedures, and protocols for the project, including incident management, confined spaces, safety inspections, HS orientation and training, JHA procedures, HS subcontractor management, reporting and HS dashboard, first aid/emergency/rescue plan, etc.
- Conduct punctual inspections of the project site and proceed with HS inspection and audit activities to identify potential hazards and ensure compliance with safety standards and regulations.
- Ensure adherence to local, provincial, and federal health and safety regulations and industry best practices.
- Maintain records of safety incidents, inspections, and training sessions in compliance with regulatory requirements.
- Collaborate with project teams to identify risks associated with tunneling activities, including excavation, blasting, and machinery operations.
- Develop and update job hazard analyses (JHAs) and risk assessments for all project tasks.
- Act as a point of contact for safety-related matters, coordinating with subcontractors, project site managers, and representatives.
- Communicate safety updates and changes to all stakeholders through regular meetings and notices.
- Encourage a culture of safety through ongoing engagement, recognition, and feedback initiatives.
- Serve as a role model for safety-first behavior and practices on the project site.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Diploma or degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Science, or a related field.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in a safety-related role, preferably within major construction projects.
- Valid safety certifications such as NCSO (National Construction Safety Officer), CRSP (Canadian Registered Safety Professional), or equivalent.
- Knowledge/certification related to HS standards (CSA, COR).
- First Aid and CPR, Emergency preparedness certification preferred.
Work Environment
This position could be maintained at the start of the construction phase, with opportunities to move into a site safety supervision role if desired. The work environment includes working on a major project, which may involve exposure to construction hazards, confined spaces, and large machinery. Safety equipment and protocols will be provided and enforced to ensure a safe working environment.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $50.00 - $60.00/hr.

This is a fully onsite position in Surrey,BC.
