Job Title: Controls Engineer
Job Description
We are seeking an experienced Controls Engineer to join our team. The ideal candidate will have 10-15 years of experience in instrumentation and controls engineering, particularly within gas projects. This role involves producing engineering work packages, managing vendor relationships, and leading a small team of engineers. This position is based in our Surrey office with a hybrid work schedule.
Responsibilities
- Produce engineering work packages for construction, including wiring instrumentation, installation, instrument spec sheets, junction box wiring drawings, cable schedules, PLC wiring drawings, instrumentation location drawings, instrument index, and instrumentation sizing.
- Direct and delegate tasks to junior Engineers in Training (EITs) and advise on instrumentation as needed.
- Review Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs).
- Manage vendor relationships, including procurement packages and RFQs.
- Conduct gas analyses and manage burner management systems.
- Develop P&IDs and implement project specifications.
- Assist in project scheduling and development of engineering and capital cost estimates.
- Prepare technical specifications, instrument data sheets, requisition quotes, and bid evaluations.
- Perform instrument design calculations.
- Configure reports and update and maintain instrument databases.
- Check and review vendor drawings against industry codes and standards to ensure technical accuracy.
- Design control panels, IO drawings, and communication networks.
- Design junction box wiring, location diagrams, and cable schedules.
- Prepare control narratives, philosophy documents, and written scopes of work for instrument and controls contractors.
- Prepare shutdown keys/cause and effect matrices.
- Program, commission, and startup various types of control systems per project requirements.
Essential Skills
- 10-15 years of experience within instrumentation and controls engineering, particularly from gas projects.
- Proficiency in producing engineering work packages for construction, including all related drawings and documentation.
- Experience with software such as Bluebeam, AutoCAD 3D/Navisworks, and Elecdes/AVEVA (instrumentation database).
- P Eng - Ability to stamp instrumentation and controls designs.
- Strong understanding of gas analyses.
- Occasional travel to sites in BC and Houston.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Calm and collected under pressure.
- Strong communication skills - will interact with clients frequently on project updates/needs.
- People management skills, including the ability to work with others and delegate tasks.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- US Professional Engineering license is a plus.
- Experience with process safety and functional safety (IEC).
- Proficiency in PLC, DCS, HMI, RTU, and SCADA programming (e.g., Allen-Bradley, DeltaV, Modicon, ABB 800XA, Honeywell Experion/PKS).
- Experience with LNG storage and hydrogen projects.
- Knowledge of electrical engineering.
Work Environment
This role is based in our Surrey office with a hybrid work schedule. The hours are Monday to Friday, 7:30 am to 5 pm, with an unpaid lunch break. Fridays are work-from-home days, but employees must have their own personal device to log into the VPN portal. The dress code is business casual, leaning towards casual. Our team includes disciplined project engineering leads who report to functional department heads and work closely with project managers. Parking is available on-site.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $80.00 - $90.00
