Job Description

We are currently seeking an In-Vitro Assay/Microbiology Technician to provide technical support for performing standard and complex in-vitro assays, including PCR, ELISA, and cell-based assays. This position operates Monday through Friday with occasional overtime on nights, weekends, and holidays.

Responsibilities

• Work with highly hazardous biological/toxic materials in BSL-2 and BSL-3 laboratories.
• Conduct assays on samples from in vivo pathogenicity/efficacy/toxicity studies as well as human clinical samples, including bacterial enumeration, viral assays, ELISA, PCR, nucleic acid isolation, and flow cytometry.
• Perform routine blood and tissue processing and prepare reagents.
• Contribute to the development and validation of equipment and biological assays.
• Understand and perform dilutions including mathematical calculations involved.
• Decontaminate equipment and materials, maintain mammalian, viral, and bacterial cell cultures.
• Act as lab technical point of contact, perform laboratory cleaning and upkeep.
• Manage supply inventory, ordering, and receipt.
• Handle waste management, operate autoclaves, prepare decontamination solutions, and assist with laundry.
• Operate necessary equipment to produce high-quality data, perform routine maintenance and calibration of equipment, and maintain equipment logbooks.
• Use electronic databases for sample tracking and perform basic data manipulation in a spreadsheet environment.
• Set up, validate, and operate laboratory equipment and software.
• Read and adhere to SOPs, methods, and facility guidelines.
• Perform timely quality control and technical review of data.
• Create and maintain study files in accordance with SOPs, protocol, quality requirements, and client specifications.
• Recognize and report deviations from accepted practices, prepare deviation reports as needed.
• Adhere to all laboratory safety requirements.
• Train and guide less experienced staff on specific tasks.
• Serve as technical co-lead on portions of studies.
• Work independently and efficiently in a team environment.
• Verify the accuracy, applicability, and reasonableness of project work, and make recommendations.
• Conduct standard and non-standard tasks under close supervision and guidance of more experienced staff.

Essential Skills

• Experience in Microbiology, Biology, and Aseptic technique.
• Proficiency in PCR, assays, and cell culture.
• Ability to perform in vitro assays.
• Associate degree in microbiology/molecular biology plus 1 year of experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Strong written and oral communication skills.
• Ability to obtain/maintain certification in the Biological Suitability Assessment Program (BSAP).
• Ability to obtain/maintain DoJ Security Risk Assessment (SRA) approval.
• Ability to obtain/maintain CDC approval to work with BSAT material.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Willingness to work in a BSL-2 and BSL-3 environment and wear appropriate respiratory protection.
• Willingness to be immunized with FDA licensed vaccines and Investigational New Drugs (IND) for persons at risk to occupational exposure of biological agents.
• Willingness to participate in random drug screening.
• Ability to respond appropriately to various alarms and potential emergency situations.
• Sufficient medical fitness to perform work in a lab wearing appropriate respiratory equipment and perform all assigned duties.
• Ability to work night, weekend, and holiday hours.

Work Environment

This position is located at the West Jefferson location in a laboratory setting. Core hours are first shift Monday through Friday on a 9/80 schedule, with occasional required availability on weekends, nights, or holidays. This role is within a government facility.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $21.00 - $21.00/hr.
