Job Title: Phlebotomist II

Job Description

Summary: The main function of a phlebotomist is to assist in performing various assigned duties, troubleshooting, training, and making workflow recommendations.

Responsibilities

• Perform blood draws, label specimens, centrifuge specimens, record maintenance data, and decontaminate equipment.
• Update patient information as necessary.
• Collect and store specimens according to established procedures.
• Clearly and courteously explain the process of venipuncture, blood drawing, and other specimen collection procedures (e.g., urine or fecal).
• Demonstrate techniques using straight needles and/or butterfly needles.
• Fully understand all physicians' orders.
• Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes.
• Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test order.
• Verify all test requisitions or computer labels against script to ensure 100% accuracy.
• Package specimens for transport.
• Store specimen samples at the required temperature, place samples in appropriate collection containers/tubes, and accurately label them.
• Follow specific protocols to maintain the integrity of the specimen during transport.
• Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations.
• Attend annual department training sessions.
• Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries.

Essential Skills

• Valid Phlebotomy certification for the state of employment (as required in some states).
• Minimum of 6 months' work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
• High School Diploma or GED.
• 2-4 years of experience.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Experience with straight needles and butterfly needles.
• Knowledge of specimen processing and medical protocols.
• Strong patient care skills.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Work Environment

The role is based in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting. The position requires compliance with OSHA and DEP regulations. Dress code and attire are in accordance with healthcare facility standards. The work involves handling specimens and operating medical equipment.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $17.00 - $20.00/hr.
