Job Description

The main function of a phlebotomist is to assist in performing various assigned duties, troubleshooting, training, and making workflow recommendations.

Responsibilities

• Perform blood draws, label specimens, centrifuge specimens, record maintenance data, and decontaminate equipment.
• Update patient information and collect/store specimens according to established procedures.
• Explain the venipuncture (blood drawing) process and other specimen collections (e.g., urine or fecal) to patients in a clear and courteous manner.
• Demonstrate techniques using straight needles and/or butterfly needles.
• Fully understand all physicians' orders and match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes.
• Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by the test order.
• Ensure 100% accuracy by checking all test requisitions or computer labels against scripts.
• Package specimens for transport and store specimen samples at the required temperature.
• Place samples in appropriate collection containers/tubes, accurately label them, and follow specific protocols for transport to maintain specimen integrity.
• Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations.
• Attend annual department trainings.
• Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries.

Essential Skills

• Blood draw experience of 1 year
• Experience with all patient types
• Experience with pediatrics and geriatrics
• Customer service oriented

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite
• High School Diploma or GED
• 1 year of experience

Work Environment

The work environment is a very busy Patient Service Center (PSC), where you will see over 50 patients per day. Working hours are from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, Monday through Friday

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $18.00 - $19.00/hr.
