Job Description
The main function of a Phlebotomist I is to assist in performing various assigned duties, troubleshooting, training, and making workflow recommendations.
Responsibilities
- Perform blood collections by venipuncture and capillary techniques for all age groups.
- Collect specimens for drug screens, paternity tests, alcohol tests, etc.
- Perform data entry of patient information in an accurate and timely manner.
- Process billing information and collect payments when required.
- Prepare all collected specimens for testing and analysis.
- Maintain patient and specimen information logs.
- Provide superior customer service to all patients.
- Perform administrative and clerical duties as necessary.
- Travel to additional sites when needed.
- Collect and store specimens according to established procedures.
- Properly explain the process of venipuncture and other specimen collection techniques.
- Demonstrate techniques using straight needles and/or butterfly needles.
- Understand and comply with all physicians' orders.
- Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes.
- Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test order.
- Check all test requisitions or computer labels against scripts to ensure accuracy.
- Package specimens for transport and store them according to required temperatures.
- Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations.
- Attend annual department trainings.
- Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries.
Essential Skills
- Valid Phlebotomy certification for the state where you will be employed as required in some states.
- Minimum of 1 year work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Ability to pass a standardized color blindness test.

- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Ability to work independently or in a team environment.
- Reliable transportation and a clean driving record if applicable.
- Flexibility to work overtime as needed.
- Previous experience as a phlebotomist with a track record of providing exceptional customer service.
Work Environment
This position is based in a Patient Service Center (PSC) that services pediatrics, geriatrics, and patients ranging from newborns to the elderly. The work environment is medium-sized, and the worker is expected to stand for the majority of their shift. The role involves working with a team and other employees. The initial training period includes one week of orientation. Pay and Benefits
