Job Description
The Structural Steel Modeler is responsible for creating detailed 3D models and drawings of structural steel components and assemblies using SDS/2 software. This role involves interpreting architectural and engineering drawings, developing accurate models, and collaborating with design and construction teams to ensure structural integrity and adherence to project specifications. The Structural Steel Modeler plays a pivotal role in optimizing design efficiency, identifying potential construction issues, and facilitating the fabrication and installation of steel structures.
Responsibilities
- Utilize SDS/2 software to create detailed 3D models of structural steel components, including beams, columns, connections, and assemblies.
- Generate fabrication drawings, shop drawings, and erection plans in SDS/2, ensuring accuracy and compliance with industry standards and project requirements.
- Interpret architectural and engineering drawings, specifications, and design documents to accurately model and detail steel structures.
- Prepare comprehensive documentation, including bills of materials (BOMs), connection details, and assembly instructions, using SDS/2 software.
- Collaborate with structural engineers, architects, and project managers to review design intent, resolve design conflicts, and optimize structural details.
- Participate in design review meetings, clash detection analysis, and coordination efforts to ensure seamless integration of steel structures within the project scope.
- Conduct quality checks and verification of SDS/2 models and drawings to ensure accuracy, completeness, and compliance with regulatory codes and standards (e.g., AISC, AWS).
- Address design modifications, RFIs (Requests for Information), and change orders in collaboration with project stakeholders.
- Communicate technical information, design concepts, and project updates effectively to stakeholders, contractors, and fabrication teams.
- Maintain organized documentation, revision control, and project records related to modeling activities and design changes in SDS/2.
Essential Skills
- Expertise in SDS/2 software for 3D modeling and detailing of structural steel components.
- Strong understanding of structural steel detailing practices, connections, and fabrication processes.
- Ability to interpret architectural and engineering drawings, and specifications.
- Attention to detail, accuracy, and adherence to industry standards and project deadlines.
- Effective communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams.
- Must have 5 years of SDS2 Software Experience.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Proven experience as a structural steel detailer, modeler, or drafter with proficiency in SDS/2 software for structural steel detailing.
- Experience in structural steel detailing, fabrication, or construction industries preferred.
- Proficiency in computer-aided design (CAD) software (e.g., AutoCAD) for supplementary tasks.
- Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) and Bluebeam.
Work Environment
The work environment includes the use of SDS/2 software for structural steel detailing within an office setting, involving extensive use of computer screens. Occasional site visits or meetings with project teams and stakeholders may be required. The role offers the flexibility to work from home and may require availability for flexible work hours to accommodate project deadlines and deliverables.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $32.00 - $38.00/hr.
