ABCD provides free tax preparation assistance to help reduce clients’ tax burdens in conjunction with the IRS's Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. The program offers free basic tax return preparation to income-eligible individuals across ABCD’s neighborhood sites.
The Client Advocate – VITA is responsible for providing high-quality tax assistance to taxpayers through the Volunteer and Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA). The role also maintains case management files and provides supportive services and referrals. This position works in conjunction with other local community and city service providers in order to meet clients’ goals, developing a positive working relationship with various organizations within the public and private sectors in order to expand placement efforts.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct intake process and assist clients in establishing educational and occupational goals.
- Provide high-quality tax assistance to all taxpayers by ensuring all income, deductions, and allowable credits are claimed.
- Refer clients to additional services including but not limited to food pantry, fuel assistance, SummerWorks services, and Virtual Gateway services, including food stamps and health insurance.
- Maintain client records with an emphasis on data integrity and confidentiality.
- Coordinate outgoing referrals with other neighborhood service providers to insure client needs are met.
- Maintain accurate database or agency, and employers.
- Consult with Site Manager/Director, to better evaluate client strengths and weaknesses as they relate to appropriate case management of clients.
- Perform other related duties as assigned from time to time.
Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
- Demonstrated proficiency in MS Word and Excel.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively with people of varying racial, ethnic, cultural, educational and socio-economic backgrounds.
- Bilingual in Haitian Creole, Spanish, or Arabic preferred.
