Summary
The Assistant Chef supports daily kitchen operations, food preparation, and catering services while ensuring quality, safety, and cleanliness. This role works closely with the Head Chef and kitchen team to maintain an efficient and organized kitchen.
Essential Functions:
- Assist in preparing, cooking, and serving meals while maintaining quality, temperature, and presentation.
- Follow standard recipes and portion guidelines.
- Time food production to ensure smooth service.
- Maintain a clean and organized kitchen, including dishwashing and sanitizing workstations.
- Follow SERV Safe protocols for food handling, cooling, and thawing.
- Store and label food using the FIFO (First In, First Out) method.
- Record food and equipment temperatures and assist with cleaning schedules.
- Assist in receiving, storing, and organizing food and supply deliveries.
- Minimize food waste and follow portioning guidelines.
- Assist in food preparation, setup, and service for catering events.
- Ensure all catered food is prepared at Active Generations and transported using company vehicles when required.
- Keep kitchen equipment and workstations clean and in good condition.
- Report any equipment issues to the Chef.
- Follow all food safety, hygiene, and workplace safety regulations.
- Adhere to Active Generations’ sanitation and dress code standards.
- Support the Head Chef in maintaining a South Dakota Health Department rating of 95% or higher.
Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- Previous kitchen or food service experience preferred.
- Knowledge of food safety regulations (SERV Safe certification preferred or willingness to obtain).
- Strong teamwork, communication, and organizational skills.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and adapt to changing needs.
Physical Requirements:
- Frequent standing, bending, reaching, and lifting.
- Ability to lift/move 10 lbs regularly, 30 lbs occasionally, and 60 lbs with assistance.
- Must carry hot foods, use repetitive motions for stirring/whipping, and operate kitchen equipment safely.
- Requires clear vision (close, distance, color, depth perception, and focus adjustment).
- Must remain calm and effectively handle fast-paced or stressful situations.
Work Environment:
- The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate and sometimes loud.
- Will be exposed to hot and cold temperatures.
- Will be exposed to warm, wet, and humid conditions in the dish room.
- May be exposed to communicable disease when working with the members, customers, and community.
