What are the responsibilities and job description for the Mechanic - Transportation 8 Hour Position position at Acton-Agua Dulce Unified?
MECHANIC
Repair, maintain and service school buses (diesel and gasoline) and all other
gasoline and diesel powered equipment. Operates a school bus when needed for
the purpose of repair.
Examples of Duties:
Inspects buses, trucks, automobiles and other mechanical equipment for defects;
reports major defects to supervisor; repairs and adjusts components of all buses,
trucks, automobiles and other power equipment belonging to the district; performs
minor and major engine overhauls; overhaul or repair of generators, starters, air
compressors, carburetors, clutches, transmissions, drive lines, and brake systems;
check and repair electrical systems, change tires, do welding as needed; do body
work and painting of district vehicles as needed; be familiar with shop tools, keep
records of work performed on district and CHP provided forms; maintain vehicle
preventative maintenance records, assist with CHP inspections and other related
duties as assigned.
Special Requirements:
Possession of a valid California Motor Vehicle Operator’s License (Class B). Pass
school bus driver’s physical examination. Possess Passenger Endorsement
Requirements and CHP certification.
Desirable Qualifications:
Two years experience in a qualified garage or shop as a school bus, truck, or
general automobile mechanic familiar with all phases of both light and heavy duty
diesel and gasoline repair and maintenance. Certified in the service and repair of
all braking systems. Participation in driving training program as recommended by
the district transportation office.
Education: Graduation from high school or equivalent.
Knowledge of: Tools, equipment, methods used in overhauls, maintenance repair
and adjustment of all motor vehicles (diesel and gasoline). Safe driving practices,
provisions of the California Motor Vehicle Code and the Education Code
applicable to the operations of school buses. Proper procedures in case of
accident, breakdown or other emergency and be able to make decisions that
would be in the best interest of the students and their safety.
Ability to: Make a variety of mechanical repairs; diagnose mechanical troubles
and determine appropriate repair work; carry out oral and written instructions;
work effectively with others.

• Able to operate equipment in a safe and effective manner.
• Able to demonstrate manual dexterity necessary to operate machinery.
