What are the responsibilities and job description for the Acting Master Teaching Artist | ActUp Theater Arts Academy (ATAA) position at ActUp Theater?
ActUp Theater is seeking Acting Master Teaching Artists to conduct classes at various levels on various acting techniques. This position provides an inclusive community for participants at any and all abilities to creatively challenge and express themselves through training and performance. Duties include creating a class focused on learning proper acting techniques including, but not limited to, speech technique, character interpretation, and ability to absorb direction from a director.
This role will play a central role in management and supporting the work of ActUp Theater Arts Academy. At this summer's ActUp Theater Arts Academy (ATAA), we will work with participants to sharpen their skills through a series of masterclasses that will propel their talent, improve their academic achievement, and empower them to explore their talent! ATAA will provide instruction from teaching artists, interactive training, and team building experiences. This exciting position will be an asset to ActUp Theater!
Program Dates
July 8th - August 1st 2025, Monday-Thursday
Participant Tracks
Each track is designed to get the tools that today’s actors need to take the stage! With each participant’s unique talent in mind, we have created two tracks to focus, nurture, and develop an actor's creativity.
Fundamentals | Ages 8-16 | 15-20 Participants
This masterclass will focus on spatial and body awareness, speech projection, and tips on bringing real-life details into every role.
Intensives | Ages 17-30 | 15-20 Participants
The character is in the details, and our experienced instructor will show you how to create memorable characters, powerful performances, and a long-lasting career.
Required Qualifications
- Teaching acting principles to students, often in a group setting
- Conducting individual readings to perform an assessment of a student’s talent
- Creating an adaptable lesson plan based on student levels and ability
- Emphasizing skills like enunciation, diction, and dialect development using speech drills, improvisation, explanation, and other voice exercises
- Explaining body language and expression, engaging students in character development and personality projection, and helping each student develop a personal style
- Experienced in developing and channeling group dynamics for positive learning outcomes.
- Experienced and conversant in relational and restorative justice classroom management approaches with and for BIPOC students.
- Successfully teaching youth and/or adults in disenfranchised communities.
- Teaching age-appropriate creative expression, acting skills, student self-directed improvisation, and interdisciplinary inquiry projects during and after school.
- Integrating learning standards and arts blueprints.
- Highly motivated and motivating
- Open to learning and professional critique to improve practice and problem-solve in the field.
- Demonstrates child-centered teaching and learning methods.
- Serving students, teachers and communities similar to ours.
- Using differentiated and culturally responsive instruction
- Continually improving practice
- Supporting an organizational vision, mission, core values and programs similar to ours.
- Acting education grounded in professional artistry
