What are the responsibilities and job description for the Personal Lines Underwriter (Entry-Level) position at Acuity Insurance?
Acuity is seeking a Personal Lines Underwriter to oversee selection and classification of risks within a given underwriting territory. Major areas of responsibility include the application of our company's underwriting guidelines, use of good judgment and extensive written and oral communication with agents and policyholders. The ideal candidate must be able to travel and conduct continuing education and training sessions for agents and Customer Service Reps. In this role, you will assist sales in the management of assigned agents by monitoring the agent profiles and evaluating the quality and characteristics of submitted business as well as adherence to company guidelines.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Reviews and evaluates new policy applications and existing policy changes for acceptability and conformance to company underwriting guidelines.
- Orders, reviews, and evaluates applicable underwriting reports.
- Accepts or rejects applications based upon underwriting guidelines.
- Terminates ineligible risks.
- Explains coverages to agents and policyholders.
- Answers additional inquiries from peers, agents, and policyholders.
- Requests information from employees, agents, and policyholders.
- Reviews adequacy of insurance to value on dwellings and other non-business buildings.
- Conducts post-loss underwriting to determine continued risk eligibility or to offer a continuation with altered terms.
- Participates in agency re-underwriting as necessary.
- Maintains a file for each agency in his/her underwriting territory.
- Visits agents in the assigned underwriting territory on a regular basis. (Some overnight travel may be required)
- Assists in the management of the agents in your territory by evaluating agent profiles, assessing the quality and overall characteristics of the agent’s book of business and conformance with Acuity guidelines.
- Provides training and education to agents and CSR’s on the Acuity guidelines, products, and systems.
- Forms and develops new relationships as well as maintaining and strengthening existing relationships with assigned agents.
- Supports Sales with agency agendas and initiatives.
- Maintains regular and predictable attendance.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION:
Four-year degree from an accredited college or university with evidence of high scholastic achievement, or equivalent insurance experience.
EXPERIENCE:
At least one year of general insurance experience is preferred; however, we will consider someone who has the desire to enter a training program.

The salary range for this position is $63,500.00 annually. This salary range is an estimate and the actual salary will vary based on applicant’s education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities.
