What are the responsibilities and job description for the Systems Engineer - Open Systems (Desktop) position at Acuity Insurance?
Acuity is seeking a Systems Engineer - Open Systems (Desktop) to research, organize, implement, control and maintain hardware, software and network sub-systems and components per project assignment, while designing interface routines to enhance systems software, improving overall performance and providing transparent functions to the users. The Systems Engineer will address problems expeditiously, utilizing circumventions when applicable (prior to resolution) to minimize system outages.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Test new software products and releases as well as hardware devices.
- Assist in establishing standards and trouble reporting procedures.
- Assist in system performance monitoring, reporting and tuning.
- Assist in the integration of multiple hardware platforms.
- Participate in the Disaster Recovery plan and rehearsals.
- Design new or revised architectures to include the software, hardware, and communications to support the total requirements and provide for present and future cross-functional requirements and interfaces.
- Install, configure, and upgrade operating systems, driver packages, and software applications on desktop systems.
- Diagnose and troubleshoot hardware and software issues on desktop systems.
- Maintain and evolve deployment tools such as SCCM, Intune, and Microsoft Autopilot.
- Maintain and evolve provisioning processes and procedures of desktop systems.
- Work closely with other IT teams, including technical support analysts, security, and application teams, to ensure seamless integration and operation of desktop systems.
- Train local and remote users on operating system software packages and hardware operation.
- Stay current with technology trends and drive continuous improvement in desktop systems and processes.
- Assess the need for system reconfigurations (minor or significant) based on request trends and provide recommendations.
- Regular and predictable attendance.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION:
Bachelor’s or Associate Degree in Computer Science, MIS or equivalent and continued field specific education.
EXPERIENCE:
3-5 years practical experience in computer operations, applications and/or technical support or information security.
OTHER QUALIFICATIONS:
- A keen interest and aptitude for problem identification and resolution.
- Full understanding of operating system hardware, software, network components, security, and/or database management system.
- Ability to provide exact audit trials and recovery points during project life cycles to ensure maximum system stability.
- Ability to work cooperatively with technical and non-technical system users and industry vendors.
- Knowledge of progressive security as it pertains to the networking, operating systems, software, and hardware of assigned servers.
- Experience with tapeless backup / recovery systems and documenting these processes.
- Detailed understanding and experience with network protocols.
- Experience with Disaster Recovery planning and testing.
- Good listening ability as well as the ability to competently train others.
- Willingness to respond to problems with little notice as well as to adjusting off hours scheduling to meet company project installation dates.
- Depending on job responsibilities, may be required to reside within a 2-hour radius of the Acuity corporate headquarters.
- Be accountable and respond when reached out to for assistance during and outside of typical work hours, this may include participating in an off-hour call list.
