Plans, organizes and oversees the daily operations of the Ada County Sheriff's Office Forensic Lab. Supervises personnel in a variety of multi-discipline forensic activities in the field, office, and laboratory. Manages annual forensic lab budget. Ensures laboratory safety, security and quality, including compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 : 2017 accreditation standards. Performs routine forensic casework.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES

Work is performed under the general direction of a Police Lieutenant and requires considerable discretion, independent judgment, and initiative. Work includes multiple forensic disciplines.

SHIFT INFORMATION

Generally Monday - Friday, day shift hours, with on-call responsibilities.

Essential Functions

  • Provides and coordinates laboratory services for law enforcement and attorneys;
  • Ensures laboratory activities conform to state and federal laws, professional practices, and laboratory regulations;
  • Implements and enforces policy and procedure protocols;
  • Prioritizes lab operations to meet the most urgent needs;
  • Supervisory duties : provides guidance, assigns work, evaluates performance, tracks time, coordinates schedules, takes disciplinary action, and hires new employees;
  • Develops strategic plans, goals, objectives, and performance indicators;
  • Tracks caseload productivity and turnaround time and oversees the collection of statistical information;
  • Prepares and administers budgets to address expenditures for forensic lab operations;
  • Monitors expenditures and recommends purchase approvals;
  • Oversees the inventory and maintenance of all supplies, equipment, and software;
  • Coordinates crime scene response for laboratory staff;
  • Collects, secures, and maintains evidence and keeps accurate documentation;
  • Analyzes scientific data to form opinions or interpretations and reports findings;
  • Testifies in court proceedings; and
  • Participates in annual proficiency testing, inventories, and internal audits.

  • Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Biology, Chemistry, Forensic Science or a related field required;
  • Five (5) years of experience scientifically analyzing forensic evidence, preparing reports, and presenting findings in court, or an equivalent combination of laboratory experience and / or graduate degree;
  • At least one year of supervising, managing, or leading others;
  • Experience preparing reports and presenting findings in a court of law;
  • Fingerprint or impression analysis and comparison experience preferred;
  • Crime scene investigation and documentation experience preferred;
  • Knowledge of training, and principles and practices of effective supervision;
  • Knowledge of Federal, State, and County laws, rules, and ordinances, and knowledge of the criminal justice system;
  • Knowledge of international standards for laboratory accreditation;
  • Knowledge of proper evidence collection, preservation, and storage;
  • Knowledge of scientific laboratory methods, equipment, processes, and procedures;
  • Knowledge of hazards and safety practices associated with chemicals and infectious diseases;
  • Skill in operating computers and using office-related software;
  • Ability to perform duties independently and in a self-directed manner;
  • Ability to plan, assign, and manage others and to ensure effective performance and results;
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships;
  • Ability to manage themselves and others constructively and impartially;
  • Ability to think critically and examine concerns from multiple perspectives;
  • Ability to recognize and define problems, collect data, establish facts, and determine valid solutions;
  • Ability to interpret a variety of technical instructions;
  • Ability to work accurately and with attention to detail;
  • Ability to effectively communicate with law enforcement officials, court officials, case subjects, and other members of the public;
  • Ability to communicate effectively in the English language both verbally and in writing at a level necessary for efficient job performance;
  • Ability to safely operate a motor vehicle.
  • OTHER REQUIREMENTS

  • Must possess, or be able to possess, and maintain a valid driver's license;
  • Must pass an oral examination, polygraph examination, credit and background check prior to hire;
  • This position is required to be on-call in order to perform the primary job responsibilities;
  • This position has been designated safety sensitive and therefore the incumbent is subject to random drug testing.
  • Work Environment & Physical Demands

  • This position requires work in office, laboratory, and field environments;
  • The nature of the work may require the employee to be in the field for long periods of time and in various weather conditions;
  • Work with hazardous materials and may encounter hazardous terrain;
  • May be exposed to chemicals and infectious diseases;
  • Required to respond to crime scenes and may be exposed to unpleasant situations, images, etc.;
  • Must be able to lift up to 20 lbs.
