We are looking for an experienced and skilled individual to join our Crew. Pesticide applicators must be certified by the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (NCDA&CS) to legally apply pesticides. The certification process is managed by the Pesticide Section within the NCDA&CS. The role requires performing specialized lawn care/treatments, landscaping tasks and assisting with projects. This position is ideal for someone who enjoys working outdoors, is organized, has experience in chemical applications and lawn care.
Hours of operation: Monday - Friday 7am - 5pm with overtime. Some Saturdays may be required during the busy season or due to inclement weather.
Key Responsibilities:
A chemical grounds applicator is responsible for the safe and effective application of chemicals such as pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers, or other soil treatment products to agricultural or industrial grounds. Here are the key responsibilities of a chemical grounds applicator:
- Preparation and Mixing of Chemicals:
- Properly measure, mix, and prepare chemicals, ensuring the correct ratios and safety guidelines are followed.
- Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) to prevent exposure to harmful chemicals.
- Application of Chemicals:
- Apply chemicals to designated areas, such as crops, fields, lawns, or other grounds, using sprayers, spreaders, or other application equipment.
- Ensure the application is uniform and effective, adjusting equipment as needed based on the type of chemical or terrain.
- Adherence to Safety Protocols:
- Follow all safety protocols related to chemical handling, mixing, and application to protect personal health, the environment, and surrounding communities.
- Ensure that equipment is in good working order to prevent leaks or accidents.
- Safely operate equipment such as ride-on spreader/sprayer, lawnmower, weed trimmer, leaf blower, hedge trimmer, etc.
- Record Keeping and Documentation:
- Maintain accurate records of chemical types, application rates, dates, and areas treated for compliance with local, state, or federal regulations.
- Document environmental conditions, such as weather and soil moisture, to ensure proper application timing.
- Environmental Compliance:
- Adhere to environmental protection laws and guidelines to minimize chemical runoff, pollution, and harm to non-target organisms.
- Understand and apply regulations related to pesticide use, waste disposal, and buffer zones.
- Equipment Maintenance:
- Inspect, clean, and maintain equipment regularly to ensure it functions properly and is free from contaminants or blockages.
- Ensure that all tools and machines are calibrated and set for optimal application rates.
- Monitoring and Reporting:
- Monitor the effectiveness of applications and report any issues or concerns, such as pest resistance or chemical damage to crops.
- Adjust chemical formulations and application methods based on observed outcomes.
- Training and Continuous Learning:
- Stay updated on new chemicals, techniques, and regulations related to chemical applications.
- Attend training sessions or certifications to maintain the necessary knowledge and comply with legal standards.
- Risk Management:
- Assess and mitigate risks associated with chemical use, including evaluating potential hazards to people, animals, and the environment.
- Plan applications based on weather forecasts to minimize drift or runoff.
- Lawn Care Maintenance:
- Perform and manage tasks including mowing, dethatching, edging, trimming, aerating, and overseeding.
- Rake leaves, mulch, and remove debris from grounds to ensure a clean and presentable landscape.
- Plant Care and Maintenance:
- Perform advanced tasks such as pruning, fertilization, and seasonal plantings to maintain the health and appearance of landscapes.
- Perform other landscaping-related duties as directed by the supervisor or management.
- Snow Removal (Seasonal): Shovel and remove snow and ice from pathways and driveways, as necessary.

Requirements:
- Experience: Minimum 1 year of experience in pesticides/chemical application and lawn care or landscaping.
- Physical Fitness: Ability to lift and carry heavy materials (up to 50 lbs) and perform strenuous physical tasks in various weather conditions.
- Certifications: Pesticide application certifications in Agricultural Pest Control or Right-of-Way Pest Control.
- Driver’s License: A valid driver’s license is REQUIRED.
Preferred Skills:
- Operating and maintaining a wide range of landscaping tools and equipment.
- Advanced knowledge of plant care, pest control, fertilization, and seasonal maintenance.
- Familiarity with irrigation systems, which includes maintenance, and troubleshooting.
- Basic carpentry, masonry, or construction skills.
