Position Overview:
The Construction Estimator at Adams Contracting, LLC is responsible for preparing detailed and accurate cost estimates for heavy/highway construction projects. This role plays a critical part in supporting the Senior Project Manager and Operations Manager by providing essential cost data and analysis to ensure the financial success of each project. The Estimator works closely with these managers to finalize estimates, conducts a final review with the President before bid submissions, and actively seeks new project opportunities. Additionally, the Estimator ensures compliance with Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBE) and self-perform goals, grows the vendor and customer databases, and achieves a predetermined amount of awarded work annually.
Key Responsibilities:
- Cost Estimating: Develops detailed cost estimates for materials, labor, equipment, and subcontractors based on project drawings, specifications, and other relevant documentation.
- Collaboration and Review: Works closely with the Senior Project Manager and Operations Manager to prepare, review, and finalize bids. Conducts a final estimate review with the President before submission.
- Bid Preparation: Ensures that all project costs align with the scope of work and that bids are complete and accurate before submission.
- Subcontractor and Supplier Coordination: Obtains, evaluates, and negotiates quotes from subcontractors and suppliers to ensure optimal pricing for each project.
- Cost Analysis: Performs cost analysis on ongoing projects, adjusting estimates as necessary to reflect scope changes or unforeseen issues.
- Quantity Takeoffs: Conducts detailed quantity takeoffs to determine material needs for each phase of the project.
- Budget Development: Assists the project management team in developing project budgets and ensures cost control throughout the project lifecycle.
- Cost Reporting: Prepares cost reports for the Senior Project Manager and Operations Manager, including forecasts and budget comparisons for future expenditures.
- Change Order Estimating: Provides detailed estimated costs for change orders on existing projects, ensuring accurate cost tracking and financial adjustments.
- Budgeting Information: Prepares detailed budgeting data for successful bids to be integrated into the accounting system.
- Vendor and Subcontractor Awards: Provides detailed cost data to support vendor and subcontractor award decisions.
- Risk Assessment: Identifies cost-related risks and recommends mitigation strategies to the project management team.
- Historical Data Maintenance: Maintains a database of historical cost data for future benchmarking and reference.
- Vendor and Customer Database Development: Expands and enhances the company’s vendor and customer database to support future project needs.
- Performance Goals: Secures a predetermined amount of awarded work by year-end to meet company performance targets.
- DBE Participation: Ensures that minority and Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBE) goals are met on relevant projects.
- Self-Perform Requirements: Tracks and ensures compliance with self-perform requirements on designated projects.
- Strategic Planning: Aligns cost estimating efforts with the company’s strategic goals and objectives.
- Project Search: Proactively searches for new project opportunities that align with the company’s expertise and strategic objectives.

Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in construction management, engineering, or a related field (preferred).
- 3 years of experience in construction estimating, particularly in the heavy civil or infrastructure sectors.
- Strong knowledge of construction methods, materials, labor, and equipment costs.
- Proficiency in estimating software (e.g., Bluebeam, ProEst) and spreadsheet tools.
- Excellent analytical skills, with a strong attention to detail.
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to present cost data clearly to leadership.
- Ability to work collaboratively with project managers, subcontractors, and suppliers.
