What Success Looks Like In This Job
This is a volunteer program—the Explorer Program gives youth (ages 14-20) a chance to learn about law enforcement, develop leadership skills, and become more involved in the community.
Explorers will learn about the different areas/divisions of the Adams County Sheriff’s Office: patrol, jail, detectives, civil, and other areas of law enforcement.
Explorers will also gain skills and may compete in state-wide competitions in the following areas:- Arrest control
- CPR/first aid
- Crime scene investigation
- Criminal code
- Domestic crisis
- Drill and ceremony
- Ethics
- Firearm safety
- High-risk entry
- Hostage negotiation
- Patrol procedures
- Report writing
- Traffic control
- Traffic stops
Examples of Duties for Success
- Attend weekly business meetings and monthly trainings.
- Complete 10 hours of community service in assigned divisions—patrol, jail, detectives, and records section.
- Participate/assist in county functions such as parades, Adams County fair, banquets, and color guard.
- Involvement in fundraising activity and miscellaneous duties at the Sheriff’s Office.
- Adhere to policy, procedures, and post orders.
Qualifications for Success
To be considered for an Explorer position:
- Must be between 14-20 years of age.
- Currently enrolled in school with a minimum 2.0 GPA.
- Must be a US Citizen
- No felony convictions.
More Qualifications for Success
Once selected for the position, you will be required to:
- Volunteer 10 hours per month in an assigned area of the Sheriff’s Office.
- Attend at least two meetings per month.
- Attend the Explore mini academy within one year of appointment.
- Participate in physical fitness activities.
