Fire Inspector

Job Summary:
We are seeking a detail-oriented and experienced Inspector to join our team. As an Inspector, you will be responsible for conducting inspections of various systems and structures to ensure compliance with safety regulations and industry standards. Your expertise in construction inspection.

Work Hours: Monday-Friday – 40 Hour Work Week or as necessary to perform the duties of the position

Position Summary:

Must be able to follow direction, have excellent communication skills, and possess the ability to interact well with employees, citizens, and members of the community.

Must be able to follow applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations as they apply to fire services, building and fire codes, employment law, safety regulations, National Fire Protection Association standards, local municipal codes and departmental rules, agency regulations, and standard operating procedures.

The Fire Inspector will be required to obtain knowledge pertaining to requirements for the maintenance of fire protection, life safety, and exiting systems and must understand building construction types and occupancy classification requirements.

The Fire Inspector will possess knowledge of principles, practices, and techniques of modern fire prevention and community risk reduction strategies.

The Fire Inspector, under the direction of the Fire Marshal, or his/her designee, is responsible for the performance of the fire code compliance programs, including but not limited to, education and enforcement of fire and life safety regulations within the district.

The Fire Inspector shall work under the direct supervision of the Deputy Fire Marshal and must represent both the Fire Marshal, Deputy Fire Marshal, and the district to the public and will regularly interact with the public and members of other agencies. Contacts with others are extensive and sensitive. The Fire Inspector shall enforce the code on behalf of the district and communicate serious code matters to the Deputy Fire Marshal or his/her designee.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

The following duties are an overview of the primary functions and responsibilities for this position and should not be considered an all-inclusive list:

· Maintain knowledge of and follow the rules, policies, and procedures of the district, including the Employee Handbook, Standard Operating Procedures, Collective Bargaining Agreement, and verbal and written orders

· Work closely with all personnel to form a consistent and harmonious work environment, congruent with the goals and missions of the district

· Always work for the betterment of the district

· Provide positive and constructive written and oral communication skills

· Serve as liaison between Fire Prevention personnel, station personnel, and administration personnel with respect to community risk reduction through fire code compliance.

· Embrace and maintain community relations, and be timely and responsive to the requests, complaints and/or needs of the citizens

· Establish effective working relationships with the public, co-workers, the business community, building inspection personnel, police personnel, and others served by the Fire Prevention Bureau

· Exercise discretion and judgment in all matters dealing with both internal and external customers

· Provide feedback and input to the district with regards to code compliance.

· Maintain knowledge of current codes and nationally recognized standards, methods of fire control and changes in construction methods and materials, including but not limited to, attending pertinent conferences, seminars, schools, and meetings

· Represent the Fire Prevention Bureau, Fire Marshal, and District at local, regional, state, and national meetings, and regularly attend meetings, seminars, and trainings, as required by the district

· Testify in court proceedings and other legal matters as called upon

· Enforce applicable codes and ensure that individuals, developers, contractors, and architects comply with all federal, state, and local laws, ordinances, regulations, applicable fire codes and nationally recognized standards related to fire and life safety and hazardous materials, with the intent of reducing or eliminating the incidence of uncontrolled fires and other preventable accidents

· Comply with quality control procedures for Fire Prevention programs, including permitting, plans review, inspections, re-inspections, and other programs which support the Prevention Bureau

· Cooperate with county building officials to conduct inspections and in determining code violations

· Provide written and verbal communication to building owners/tenants, and others in a competent and professional manner

· Assist the hazardous material team and fire investigators as requested

· Perform other duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

· Knowledge of and the ability to apply the principles of business office practices and procedures, including business writing and mathematics; report and correspondence development; records management; and basic bookkeeping

· Ability to effectively use and assist co-workers with the current versions of the district’s hardware and software applications

· Above average verbal and written communication skills

· Ability to communicate and interact effectively and professionally with customers and co-workers

· Understand confidentiality and privacy laws

· Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, respond to changing priorities, and work with frequent interruptions

Education and Experience:Minimum Requirements

· Possess a High School Diploma or equivalent

· Possess and maintain a valid State of Colorado driver’s license, a satisfactory driving record, and annually participate in District approved defensive driver training

· Possess and maintain a valid C.P.R. certification or obtain within three (3) months of hire

· Within three (3) months of hire, possess and maintain International Code Council (ICC) Fire Inspector I certification and Colorado Division of Fire Prevention and Control (CDFPC) Fire Inspector I registration

· Within six (6) months of hire, complete the National Incident Management System (NIMS) ICS-100 and ICS- 700 training

· Within one (1) year of hire, possess and maintain a minimum of a valid State of Colorado Haz-Mat Awareness certification

· Meet physical fitness requirements as established by the district

· Ability to read, write, speak, and understand the English language at a level adequate to perform the job

· Possess a demonstrable knowledge of basic computer skills and the ability to operate applicable District software programs

· Obtain and maintain other certifications and training as needed and assigned by the district

- Able to speak Spanish at a level to carry out the duties of the job when interacting with third parties as may be necessary from time to time

Desirable Requirements:

· Work experience as a Fire Inspector. Substantial work experience or education in a closely related field may also be accepted

· Possess a current Colorado Division of Fire Protection and Control (CDFPC) Fire Inspector I, II or III – Plans Examiner Certification

· Possess a current ICC Fire Inspector I, II, or Fire Plans Examiner certification

· Ability to read, write, speak, and understand Spanish language is highly encouraged

Working Environment/Physical Requirements:

· A portion of this position will involve sedentary, administrative work in an office environment

· Strenuous physical activity under extreme adverse conditions

· Must pass the district’s physical fitness requirements at time of hire and as required by the District's Employee Handbook and Standard Operating Guidelines

· Must be able to lift, move and carry objects up to fifty (50) pounds

· This position requires standing, running, walking, sitting, kneeling, stooping, bending, lifting, squatting, pushing, pulling, crawling, jumping, sliding, climbing, pinching, gripping, digging, reaching over head, reaching away from body, and repetitive motion

· Will work in all weather conditions and in extreme temperatures

· Work may be performed under dangerous, hazardous, and adverse conditions, including but not limited to, slippery and uneven surfaces, proximity to moving mechanical equipment, broken glass or other materials, electrical currents, high places, and confined

· Work may result in exposure to contaminated environments, including but not limited to, hazardous materials, smoke, gases, chemicals, fumes, odors, mists, and dusts, which may require the use of Personal Protection

· Work may result in exposure to high noise levels requiring the wearing of hearing

· This position demands frequent use of sensory activities such as talking, seeing, hearing, smelling, feeling (identifying objects by touch), depth perception and color vision

Compensation and Benefits:

Adams County Fire Protection District offers a competitive salary and benefits package, including medical, dental, vision, and pension. The salary range for this position is $61,166 – $108,999 depending on experience and certifications.
