Reports To: Human Resources Director

Status: Full Time, FLSA Non-Exempt

Work Hours: 40 Hours per week/ may include additional time not limited to meetings, committees, and duties as assigned by the Human Resources Director

Adams County Fire Rescue (ACFR) is a professional, all-hazard emergency response agency serving a growing community north of Denver. Originally founded as two separate fire departments, ACFR officially unified in 2015 to enhance emergency services and operational efficiency. The district spans 22 square miles, encompassing diverse residential, commercial, and industrial areas, and serves a population of over 66,000 residents.

With a commitment to public safety, operational excellence, and community engagement, ACFR provides a wide range of services, including structural and wildland firefighting, emergency medical response, technical rescue, hazardous materials management, and public education initiatives. Our agency responds to approximately 13,000 calls annually and collaborates with regional partners through a closest-unit dispatch system to ensure the fastest and most effective emergency response.

Position Summary:

We are seeking a highly organized and detail-oriented Human Resources Assistant to support the HR Director in daily HR operations. This role requires strong multitasking abilities, confidentiality, and adaptability to handle various HR tasks, including benefits administration, workers' compensation claims, onboarding, policy updates, and employee support. The ideal candidate will thrive in a fast-paced environment and be ready to take on diverse responsibilities as needed.

Immediate Supervisor:

The Human Resources Assistant shall work under the direct supervision of the Human Resources Director.

Supervisory Authority:

This position has no supervisory functions.

Objectives:

  • Theory, principles, practices, and techniques of public human resources functions, including recruitment, testing, selection, personnel files, and records.
  • Proficiency with or the ability to quickly learn the district’s talent management systems.
  • Applicable federal, state, and local laws, rules, and regulations pertaining to a variety of human resources programs.
  • The structure and content of the English language, including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar.
  • Modern office methods, practices, procedures, equipment, and communication tools used for business functions and programs, project, and task coordination.
  • Intermediate to advanced desktop computer operations and office software applications to perform essential functions of the job.
  • Effective recordkeeping systems and procedures.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

The following duties are an overview of this position's primary duties and responsibilities and should not be considered an all-inclusive list.

  • Serve as the first point of contact for employee inquiries, providing support and escalating issues to the HR Director when necessary.
  • Assist in onboarding new employees, coordinating documentation, and managing promotion processes.
  • Maintain and organize employee records in compliance with legal and organizational requirements.
  • Assist with employment verifications and completion of HR-related documentation.
  • Support employees with benefits enrollment, questions, and changes, ensuring accuracy in processing enrollments and terminations.
  • Assist in workers’ compensation claims management, ensuring timely reporting and tracking.
  • Help ensure up-to-date HR policies and procedures comply with state and federal regulations.
  • Provide direct support to the HR Director, including scheduling, preparing reports, and assisting with employee communications.
  • Help create and maintain employee task books to track performance and documentation.
  • Maintain the highest level of confidentiality in handling employee records and sensitive HR matters.
  • Able to assist employees for HR Director in their absence.

Minimum Experience/Qualifications:

  • A high school diploma or equivalent
  • At least 3 years of administrative experience (preferably in HR or a related field).
  • Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to multitask.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Ability to handle all confidential information with the utmost discretion.

Desirable Requirements:

  • Associate’s degree or higher in a related field such as Human Resources, Business Management, Administrative, or Public Service.
  • Knowledge of HR practices, benefits, and workers' compensation.
  • Experience with fire district functions, Human Resources practices, and procedures
  • Previous experience as a Human Resources assistant for a government agency

Working Environment/Physical Requirements:

  • A substantial portion of this position will involve sedentary, administrative work in an office environment.
  • This position requires sitting for extended periods and frequently pushing, pulling, pinching, griping, reaching overhead, reaching away from body, and repetitive motions. Standing, walking, kneeling, stooping, bending, lifting up to 25 lbs. occasionally, and squatting will also be required as necessary to perform the duties of the position.
  • Requires frequent use of senses, including sight, touch, hearing, and speaking.
  • Requires daily presence in the office during normal business hours.
  • Work will involve periods of high mental and/or emotional stress
  • This position requires the ability to read, write, speak, and understand the English language at a level adequate to perform the job.
  • Must be able to work evenings, weekends, and holidays on occasion as needed.

Human Resources Assistant - Salary Range: $60,000 - $70,000 (depending on skills/qualifications)
