Job Title: Dispatcher

Department: Sheriff’s Department

Reports To: Director of Dispatch

FLSA Status: Nonexempt

Principal Function: The Dispatcher is responsible for the dispatch of emergency responders based upon incoming 911 calls to the County.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Duties include, but are not limited to:

1. Receives, answers and accurately records all incoming 911 and administrative calls and dispatches appropriate personnel to include: police, fire and emergency medical services (EMS) for the County.

2. Maintains radio contact with all emergency personnel.

3. Provides emergency medical instructions over the phone to include Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), etc. until first responders arrive; provides comfort and compassion to the caller in high risk and tragic situations.

4. Provides pre-arrival instructions and if needed, medical instructions to callers.

5. Inputs all information for calls into the computer-aided dispatch (CAD) system to include: caller; address; type of call; units dispatched and notes for responders.

6. Monitors alarm systems as well as jail video surveillance systems.

7. Runs plates, driver’s licenses, etc., with Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) for law enforcement, as requested.

8. Enters warrants and lost or stolen items into National Crime Information Center (NCIC) and the Indiana Data and Communications System (IDACS) database and conducts audits of both systems, as required.

9. Conducts status checks on the appropriate personnel who are out on calls.

10. Provides up-to-date weather announcements for all emergency personnel.

11. Completes administrative duties to include: attending meetings, reviewing reports, completing various reports, approving departmental payroll, approving invoices, answering inquiries etc., as needed.

12. Maintains an effective communication process with the Director of Dispatch.

13. Completes any additional tasks as assigned by the Sheriff, or his or her designee

Education and/or Experience: High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one-year related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Certification from the National Crime Information Center (NCIC), the Indiana Data and Communications System (IDACS), the National Incident Management System (NIMS), Powerphone, and Equator and Emergency Medical Dispatch are required within one-year of employment with the County. Previous dispatch or communication center experience is desired.

Other Skills and Abilities: The following skills and abilities are either required or desired.

· Computer software skills required include: Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Text 911, Emergency Medical Dispatch, Computer-Aided Dispatch (CAD), the National Crime Information Center (NCIC), the Indiana Data and Communications System (IDACS).

· A basic knowledge of the community resources for the ill and/or indigent persons.

· A working knowledge of all Sheriff Department policies, procedures, rules and regulations is required.

· A comprehensive knowledge of the geography of the County and Towns within the County is required.

· The ability to make accurate and quick decisions and dispatch the correct responders is required.

· The ability to make sound and rational decisions including exercising independent judgment within established protocols and guidelines is required.

· A general understanding of report writing, while paying close attention to detail is required.

· The ability remain current with all required licenses, certifications and in-service requirements is required.

· The ability to attend meetings, conferences, etc. as needed.

· The ability to operate a computer, printer, copy machine, scanner, fax machine, and other office equipment is required.

· The ability to speak, read and write in English is required. Spanish is desired.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally is exposed to working near moving mechanical parts and the risk of electrical shock when working with office equipment and outdoor weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.

The Sheriff’s Department is open 24-hours per day, seven days per week and this position may require work at any time during these hours and on the weekends and holidays. The job also requires employees to work 12-hour shifts. It also may require the ability to drive a County vehicle. Thus, a valid driver’s license may be required.

Pay: $19.20 per hour
