JOB PURPOSE SUMMARY
The Special Education Teacher of the Visually Impaired plays a crucial role in providing specialized educational support to students with visual impairments within the state of Colorado. This professional helps students achieve their educational goals by addressing their unique needs and ensuring access to the appropriate resources and support.
REQUIREMENTS
Education Level Details
Bachelor's degree in Special Education with a focus on visual impairments or a related field.
License / Certification Required
Valid Colorado teaching license with an endorsement or certification in Special Education for the Visually Impaired.
Demonstrates braille competency per Colorado Standard
Work Experience Required
A minimum of 2 years of teaching experience in special education, with a focus on visual impairments is preferred.
Other Skills and Abilities Required
Proficiency in using adaptive technology and specialized teaching materials for students with visual impairments.
Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate with students, parents, and staff.
Exceptional communication and instructional skills.
Knowledge of embossing software (Duxbury), as well as all magnification and mathematics software for the visually impaired.
Must know how to use and teach abacus and various other apparatus used by the blind / visually impaired.
Knowledge of print alternatives (i.e., Braille and auditory techniques) for students with visual impairment.
EVALUATION
Performance will be evaluated annually in accordance with the provision of the Board's policy on the evaluation of professional personnel.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
GENERAL
- Conduct comprehensive assessments to identify students' visual impairments and determine their unique needs.
- Develop and implement Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) tailored to each student's specific requirements.
- Provide direct instruction to students with visual impairments, employing appropriate teaching methods and materials.
- Transcribes lessons and other materials into Braille for blind students, large print for low-vision students, and student-specific adaptations for students with cortical visual impairments and / or deafblindness.
- Teach skills related to Braille, orientation and mobility, and the use of assistive technology.
- Provides instructional support for students in academic subject areas and provides instruction in expanded core curriculum such as daily living skills and community-based instruction.
- Collaborate with other special education professionals, teachers, and families to ensure that students' needs are met effectively.
- Offer guidance and support to classroom teachers on best practices for accommodating students with visual impairments.
- Manage and adapt specialized teaching materials and resources to facilitate student learning.
- Regularly assess student progress and provide feedback to parents and IEP teams.
- Establishes and maintains appropriate and timely data collection systems and records including, but not limited to, lesson plans, weekly schedule, Service Capture, Tienet, VI equipment inventories, student progress on IEP goals / objectives, and information required for Medicaid billing.
- Maintain accurate records and prepare reports for IEP meetings and school records.
- Responsible for registering, exiting, and updating student VI caseload for state-designated reporting dates.
