Description
Performs complex executive work litigating cases as assigned by the District Attorney on behalf of the State of Wisconsin, consulting and advising law enforcement agencies and personnel on investigative issues, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work involves setting policies and goals under the direction of the District Attorney. Limited supervision is exercised over Paralegal, Legal Secretary, Victim / Witness Coordinator, and Limited-Term Employee.
Examples of Duties
- Litigates cases as assigned by the District Attorney on behalf of the State of Wisconsin.
- Makes decisions regarding charges and drafts criminal complaints.
- Consults and advises law enforcement agencies and personnel on investigative issues, including search warrants, subpoenas, and constitutional questions.
- Prepares sufficiently for trial; gathers and ensures the accuracy of the facts of the case; prepares victim(s) and witnesses for testimony and cross-examination; makes presentations as expert testimony; assists with jury selection, prepares opening statements and closing arguments, jury instructions and all evidentiary issues.

Essential Qualifications
Juris Doctorate in law, or related field and moderate experience in criminal litigation, criminal court, municipal court, or similar legal background. Possession of State of Wisconsin Law Practice License certification upon hire. Valid driver's license in the State of Wisconsin.

Thorough knowledge of County and department policies and procedures to include emergency and inclement weather policies; ability to prioritize and manage multiple, concurrent projects, including hundreds of simultaneous prosecution cases; ability to prioritize and manage multiple, concurrent projects; attention to detail and ability to effectively organize time and anticipate, plan and successfully respond to changing circumstances; ability to drafts criminal complaints; thorough knowledge of investigative issues, including search warrants, subpoenas, and constitutional questions; ability to make arithmetic computations using whole numbers, fractions and decimals; ability to operate and use standard office equipment; knowledge and ability to use standard office and position-specific software; ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, other departments and the general public; work requires the ability to manage highly stressful situations, including adversarial relationships with other parties, working closely with people who have experienced significant trauma, and managing a high-paced, high-volume caseload.
