Job Description:
We are seeking a motivated and creative Activity Specialist who enjoys sharing their experiences while on Oberlin College’s campus and in the community. Each day’s activities will be provided ahead of time, allowing staff to focus on engaging participants and creating an environment where it feels like peers spending time together. This role is centered on building connections and fostering meaningful experiences as participants are exposed to new experiences and discover their interests.
The ideal candidate will be assertive, with a clear and authoritative voice, while maintaining professionalism and compassion for the participants we serve. They will be able to stay active throughout the day and take a proactive approach to redirecting participant behavior in our community-based day program. Comprehensive, paid training will be provided on-site, and team support is always available as well.
Services will take place on Oberlin College’s campus and within a 10-20 mile radius. Participants will have transportation to and from the day’s activity. The Activity Specialist does not need a driver’s license but must have reliable transportation to and from the designated work locations.
Schedule:
- Shifts are 9:30 AM - 1:30 PM each day, Monday to Friday
- Employee may work 8-20 hours a week
Requirements Include:
- Clear all DODD required checks and clear background with no disqualifying offenses
- Ability to pass a required drug test
- Ability to bend, kneel and lift 50 pounds
- Strong problem-solving skills
- Good communication skills
- Able to make clear decisions quickly based on risk management assessments.
- Willingness to work with adults that have developmental disabilities and redirect any behaviors associated with their diagnosis (training will be provided).
- Positive attitude and outgoing personality
- Determination to provide quality service to the individuals we serve within the program and remain professional with their guardians, state/county representatives, and co-workers/peers.
- Ability to be physically active throughout the shift including (but not limited to) pushing, pulling, lifting, bending, and walking.
- Comfortable working within a laid-back environment and able to be versatile when plans change
- Facilitate community activities based upon participants’ interests and abilities
Qualifications:
- High school or equivalent (required)
- Strong interpersonal skills, including communication, relationship-building, and flexibility
Training and Support:
- Comprehensive training on each participant
- DODD DSP (Direct Support Professional) Required Training
- CPR and First Aid Training and Certification
- Ongoing support and check-ins with Adapted Advantage staff to ensure the Activity Specialist is comfortable and confident in their role
Job Type: Part-time
Pay: $18.00 per hour
