Job Summary:
We are looking for an experienced Sales Tax Accountant to manage and ensure the accuracy of the company’s sales tax compliance across multiple states. The ideal candidate will have in-depth knowledge of sales tax regulations, hands-on experience managing multi-state tax issues, and expertise in implementing and optimizing sales tax software systems. This position will work closely with internal teams and external partners to ensure seamless tax compliance and smooth system implementations.
Key Responsibilities:
Sales Tax Compliance:
- Ensure timely and accurate filing of sales tax returns for all states in which the company operates.
- Maintain knowledge of changing state and local sales tax laws and regulations.
- Reconcile sales tax accounts and review reports to ensure accuracy and compliance.
- Provide support during sales tax audits, including gathering and organizing necessary documentation.
- Calculate and manage sales tax rates for multi-state jurisdictions.
Multi-State Sales Tax Management:
- Monitor sales tax rates, nexus laws, and exemptions for various states to ensure proper collection and reporting.
- Conduct research on state-specific sales tax laws, including taxability of products/services and other regulatory changes.
- Develop and maintain accurate records and documentation of transactions subject to sales tax.
- Collaborate with other teams to analyze business operations and assess sales tax impacts of business changes, such as new product offerings or expansions into new markets.
Software System Implementation & Optimization:
- Lead or support the implementation and integration of sales tax automation software (e.g., Avalara, Vertex) with the company’s ERP and financial systems.
- Coordinate testing and troubleshoot issues during system integration to ensure the proper flow of data and tax calculations.
- Collaborate with IT, accounting, and other business departments to optimize and streamline sales tax processes through technology.
- Provide user training and support for the sales tax system to ensure efficient use across departments.
Cross-Functional Collaboration:
- Work closely with the finance, IT, and legal teams to ensure that sales tax processes are aligned with corporate policies and business operations.
- Support the finance team with tax forecasting, budgeting, and planning related to sales tax.
- Provide guidance to other departments on sales tax-related inquiries and best practices.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related field.
- 4 years of experience in sales tax accounting, with a strong understanding of multi-state tax regulations.
- Proven experience with sales tax software systems, such as Avalara, Vertex, or similar platforms.
- Strong understanding of the implementation and integration of software systems into accounting workflows.
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
- Exceptional attention to detail with strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and accounting software (e.g., NetSuite, SAP, or Oracle).
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
- CPA or other relevant tax certification.
- Experience with tax automation systems or ERP system implementation.
