HUNGRY HIKER MANAGER
ADK (Adirondack Mountain Club) works to protect New York State wild lands and waters by promoting responsible outdoor recreation and building a statewide constituency of land stewardship advocates. Since 1922, the organization has worked to increase access to the backcountry by building trails, conserving natural areas, and developing a stewardship community that supports the ethical and safe use of New York’s outdoor spaces. A member, donor, and volunteer-supported organization, ADK reaches across New York through its 27 chapters to inspire people to enjoy the outdoors ethically.
POSITION SUMMARY
The Hungry Hiker Manager position is a two-part position: Mid-May – Mid-October the HH Manager is responsible for running all aspects of the Hungry Hiker. This includes training and managing staff, operating and managing the POS system, inventory and ordering, handling cashouts, cleaning and other responsibilities as assigned. Mid-October – Mid-May the HH Manager will work with the Kitchen coordinator to provide meals for guests and staff and help the hospitality team with other duties as needed. This includes cooking and meal service, ordering and inventory, training and coordinating staff, housekeeping, and other responsibilities as assigned.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Administrative/Managerial – 30%
- Responsible for smooth and efficient day-to-day operation of the Hungry Hiker.
- Hiring of Heart Lake Hospitality Staff jointly with the Hospitality Director.
- Scheduling of hospitality staff jointly with the Loj Manager and Hospitality Director.
- Supervise and assist in training seasonal hospitality staff.
- Assure that meals are prepared efficiently, timely and that the quality meets set standards.
- Supervise food service staff regarding service, quality of work, hospitality, use of time and appearance.
- Ensure clean kitchens and food preparation and storage that meets health code standards.
- Promote a positive and service-oriented attitude among all ADK North Country staff.
- Coordinate with necessary department heads for special functions.
- Attend weekly and monthly meetings.
- Maintain inventory lists, update monthly.
Food Preparation – 40%
- Prepare food items as needed.
- Maintain/follow proper food safety precautions
Guest Services – 30%
- Encourage a friendly and welcoming atmosphere.
- Ensure positive guest experiences.
- Interact with guests and encourage staff members to do the same.
- Promote ADK membership as part of a larger effort to support the goals and objectives of the Adirondack Mountain Club.
- Supplemental duties/responsibilities to support other club operations/functions as requested.
QUALIFICATIONS
- A passion for outdoor education and a commitment to the mission, values, and vision of the Adirondack Mountain Club.
- Public relations, team coordination, and supervisory skills.
- Cooking experience/culinary degree.
- Lifting and carrying heavy loads sometimes exceeding 50 pounds.
- Willingness to work long hours, split shifts and in hot conditions.
- Capable of maneuvering up and down stairs and through narrow hallways.
BENEFITS AND COMPENSATION

Supervises: 5-9 HLP Hospitality Staff AKA Loj Crew
Classification: Full-time, non-exempt
Salary/Wage: $18.00/hr plus tips
