The Paul Smith’s College John Dillon Park is a 200-acre wilderness area outside of Long Lake in Hamilton County NY. Due to the generosity of the late John Dillon, who was a Paul Smith’s College alumni and former CEO of International Paper, the Park was specifically designed to accommodate people with disabilities, providing accessible trails, campsites, lean-tos, boat launches, outhouses, swimming areas, fishing platforms, and more. John Dillon Park provides free camping to all members of the public through an online registration center. A welcome center is located on its property where staff assist campers and provide visitor information.

Paul Smith’s College is seeking a seasonal Assistant Park Manager to assist in the daily operations and maintenance at John Dillon Park, a fully accessible day use and wilderness camping area outside of Long Lake, NY in Hamilton County. The position will supervise and train seasonal staff, conduct administrative and financial tasks, and ensure excellent visitor relations with the public. The role involves direct participation in park maintenance activities like firewood management, groundskeeping, and minor repairs, as well as providing engaging in interpretive activities with park visitors.

The role involves direct participation in park maintenance activities like firewood management, groundskeeping, and minor repairs, as well as providing engaging in interpretive activities with park visitors.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Assist Park Manager and staff in planning, implementing and evaluating operations of the Park.
- Conduct administrative duties of the Park, such as preparing reports and maintaining records.
- Provide guests and visitors with excellent customer service.
- Supervise, coach and evaluate seasonal staff, along with scheduling and task assignments.
- Participate in daily/ weekly Park operations including cutting, splitting and stacking firewood, raking, roadwork, trash collection, minor repairs, and water system maintenance.
- Coordinate with staff the Park reservation system.
- Participate in interpretive activities with guests and visitors to the Park.
- Follow Park’s Standard Operating Procedures including safety and security guidelines.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- All education and experience levels are considered.
- Significant interest in working with a broad range of diverse individuals and groups to form a safe and inclusive workplace.
- Experience in mechanical, plumbing, electrical and carpentry skills.
- Capable of working independently with a high level of motivation.
- Ability to lift 50 pounds and perform physical labor in all weather conditions.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Proven experience with the safe use and maintenance of hand tools and motorized equipment including chainsaws, brush cutters and ATV’s.
- Ability to reside in on-site shared housing and work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.
- Driver’s license and driving record acceptable to PSC insurance carrier, which will enable authorization to drive College-owned vehicles.
