Cheltenham School District in Elkins Park, Montgomery County, PA, a diverse suburban school district of approximately 4,700 students and 750 employees, is seeking a Supervisor of Transportation.
Position Title: Supervisor of Transportation
Reports To: Director of Business Affairs
Classification: CASSA – Cheltenham Association of School Supervisors and Administrators
POSITION GOAL:
The Transportation Supervisor was established for the purpose/s of supervising student
transportation services and activities; overseeing a transportation contract; providing timely and accurate information to necessary internal and external stakeholders; and scheduling work assignments within established timeframes and standards.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Supervises, administers and implements district transportation contract with vendor as well as other transportation service through MCIU and other public and non public services
Manages operations and activities of the transportation department for public and non public
schools (e.g. bus routes, schedule route changes, transportation needs for special education
students, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring student transportation to and from schools, athletic and club events and field trips. Hands on routing and other functions completed in district management software.
- Monitors transportation budget for the purpose of ensuring that allocations are accurate and funds are maximized and efficiencies gained in transportation operations.
- Participates in meetings, workshops and seminars for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform functions.
- Takes an active role in solving discipline problems occurring on school buses.
- Provides professional training where appropriate to drivers on student discipline and behavior matters, PBIS, cultural proficiency, equity, and antiracism..
- Prepares a variety of materials (e.g. reports, memos, letters, procedures, manuals, state reports etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities, providing written reference, and/or conveying information.
- Procures fuel and other supplies and materials which are the responsibility of the school district, as required items for transportation department operations.
- Recommends policies, procedures and/or actions for the purpose of providing direction for meeting the district's goals and objectives.
- Works with building and central office administration to plan, schedule and support the transportation needs of students and families.
- Responds to emergencies including after hours situations for the purpose of addressing immediate safety concerns. Responds to inquiries from a variety of internal and external parties (e.g. staff, parents, students, public agencies, etc.) for the purpose of providing information, facilitating communication among parties and/or providing direction.
- Works collaboratively with a variety of external parties (e.g, public agencies, township officials, emergency management, fire, police, etc.) to support students and families.
- Responds to communications from staff and families and meets district expectations regarding customer service.
- Maintains safety standards in conformance with state and insurance regulations and develops a program of preventive safety for transportation operations.
- Maintains professional development in state transportation associations and awareness of national best practices.
Other Functions
Performs other related duties as assigned by the Director of Finance and his/her designee for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Associates Degree required: Bachelor Degree preferred. Prior experience as a school transportation administrator and registration with the Pennsylvania Association of School Business Officials is desirable
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret complex documents. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and manuals. Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and Board of School Directors.
- Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
- Proficient knowledge of personal computer technology with the ability to utilize word processing, spreadsheet, routing, student database, and electronic mail software and be able to operate a variety of office equipment including a telephone, copy machine, fax machine, calculator.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all administrators and the management team, the Board of School Directors, professional staff and the community. Handle multiple projects simultaneously while being able to prioritize, organize and delegate assignments.
- Current Act 34, Act 114, and Act 151 clearances.
- The individual while performing in this position will be required to:
a. Use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, and to talk, hear, taste and smell;
b. Sit, stand, walk, reach with hands and arms; and occasionally be required to stoop, kneel and crouch;
c. Have specific vision abilities, to include close vision, and the ability to adjust focus;
d. Have the ability to lift and/or move up to 10 pounds;
e. Exposed to moderate noise level;
f. Must be able to function at a high level and must possess the judgment and maturity required for making decisions that affect large numbers or staff. The nature of the job requires dealing with sensitive information and strict standards of confidentiality must be adhered to; and
g. May be required to work under stressful conditions when dealing with difficult issues and when participating in staffing matters and budgetary proceedings.
