What are the responsibilities and job description for the School Security Supervisor position at Administration Office?

Summary:
Under direction of the school safety director, assists in all phases of emergency management; assists in the analysis, planning, decision making, and assignment of available resources to mitigate, prepare for, respond to, and recover from the effects of any hazardous or emergency situation; acts as a liaison between the district and local law enforcement agencies as it relates to support for school safety. Provides training, technical assistance and training to schools in the area of emergency preparedness.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- In coordination with the school safety director, assists in the development, review and coordination of County school district emergency plans.
- Provides training, technical assistance and consultation in the areas of emergency preparedness phases, Incident Command Structure.
- Participates actively in the County school safety committee; providing insight and expertise.
- In coordination with the school safety director, coordinates, trains and implements evidenced based threat assessment protocol to assist schools in determining whether a student who makes a threat actually poses a threat.
- Ongoing response to emergency situations.
- Must have the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with elected officials, Administrators, Department Heads, staff, union officials and the public.
- Ability to work effectively in stressful emergency conditions and make responsible decisions appropriate to the scope of the position and according to established laws, policies and procedures.
- In coordination with the school safety director, may direct other district personnel as it pertains to the implementation of school safety and violence prevention measures i.e., restorative practices, concepts related to “run, hide, fight”, etc.
- Assists and/or coordinates the completion of threat and vulnerability assessments for local schools when requested.
- In coordination with the school safety director, attends meetings with the local planning team for continuous review, assessment, and implementation of activities related to the emergency management program and any local or regional homeland security initiatives or requirements.
- In coordination with the school safety director,conducts patrols of campus, inspects doors, windows, and gates to determine that all are secure and in good condition.
- Notifies maintenance department of building repairs as it relates to the security of the school campus.
- Reviews email and voicemail communications regularly and responds as needed.
- Maintains regular and reliable in person attendance.
- Follows all Board of Education policies, administrative regulations, district policies and procedures.
- Maintains confidentiality of records and student matters.
- Conducts oneself in a professional and respectful manner at all times.
- Other duties as assigned
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
- Ongoing maintenance of all requirements regarding professional courses and in-services required.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
Ability to supervise, direct and organize the work of others.
Qualifications
Education and Experience:
- Associates of Arts/Sciences degree in Emergency Management, Homeland Security, Criminal Justice, Fire Science, Public Administration from an accredited college/university preferred.
- A minimum of five (5) years’ experience in emergency management or other public safety related field at the state, county or local level.
- Experience working in a school setting and/or supporting schools preferred.
Knowledge of:
- Considerable knowledge of emergency management, public safety and homeland security processes and structures which support the health, safety and welfare of the community.
- Grant writing and administering of grant awards preferred.
- Planning and organizing emergency management programs and activities.
- The English language and an ability to effectively speak, write and understand the English language.
Licenses and Certifications:
- At time of appointment, Michigan Driver’s License with a satisfactory driving record maintained throughout employment.
- License law enforcement officer with the state of Michigan or former Licensed law enforcement officer with the state of Michigan in good standing preferred.
- Other such law enforcement licensure or credentials deemed acceptable by the Board of Education.
Physical Demands
Must possess strength, stamina, and mobility to perform medium to heavy physical work, to work around machines, to climb and descend ladders, to operate a variety of tools and equipment, and to operate a motor vehicle; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen and to distinguish colors in wiring; hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone or radio. Frequent walking in operational areas to identify problems or hazards. Finger dexterity needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard and/or calculator and to operate tools and equipment. Incumbents in this classification bend, stoop, kneel, reach, and inspect work sites. Incumbents must possess the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects weighing up to 50 pounds or heavier weights with assistance and/or the use of proper equipment.
Be free from mental or emotional instabilities which may impair the performance of essential job functions of a school security officer or which may endanger the lives of others.
Environmental Elements
Incumbents work in both indoor and outdoor environments with moderate to loud noise levels. May work in controlled temperature conditions, cold and hot temperatures, or inclement weather conditions. Exposure to chemicals, mechanical and electrical hazards, and hazardous physical substances and fumes. Incumbents will interact with individuals in interpreting and enforcing rules, policies, and procedures..
The noise level in the work environment is moderate to loud. Duties are performed indoors and occasionally outdoors.
Working Conditions
Incumbents may be assigned an irregular work schedule, including weekends, early mornings, and evenings for school events.
