Qualifications:
- Valid Indiana Administrator, Supervisor, Superintendent, or Special Education Certification.
- Master’s degree in education or a related field.
- Experience in teaching, administration, special education, and/or gifted education.
- Valid driver’s license.
General Description:
The Director of Special Education leads and oversees all special education programs, ensuring students receive appropriate educational opportunities and services. The role involves strategic planning, compliance oversight, program evaluation, and developing innovative solutions to enhance the inclusion and success of students with exceptional needs.
Essential Responsibilities:
- Ensure the systematic identification, evaluation, and placement of students eligible for special education services.
- Supervise and evaluate special education staff, adhering to district policies and collective bargaining agreements.
- Oversee and prepare required reports for the Indiana Department of Education and other stakeholders.
- Evaluate program effectiveness and recommend improvements to enhance service delivery.
- Develop and enforce policies to ensure compliance with federal and state mandates.
- Collaborate with the HR team to recruit, select, and assign staff with appropriate certifications.
- Serve as a liaison to the Superintendent, school board, administrators, teachers, and parents.
- Manage the department budget, including the application for and reporting of federal funds.
- Guide Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) and assist teachers with curriculum adaptations and instructional strategies.
- Maintain knowledge of new developments in special education and advocate for their integration into NLCS programs.
- Collaborate with general education teachers to support inclusive practices.
- Prepare contracts with external service providers as needed.
- Organize professional development opportunities for staff in the cooperative.
Other Responsibilities:
- Serve as a role model by upholding ethical principles and fostering democratic values.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Superintendent.
