What are the responsibilities and job description for the PAID Arsht Center Technical Theater Apprenticeship Program position at Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts?
The Arsht Center Technical Theater Apprenticeship Program is a paid, three-year program designed to introduce candidates from historically marginalized communities to a professional career in technical theater.
In addition to technical training, apprentices are required to attend life skills workshops focusing on financial literacy, health, résumé building, and more. Success in this position relies on great organizational skills, the ability to multitask on numerous projects. This is a highly collaborative environment that is results-driven by strategic thinking, goal-oriented action, follow through and open communication.
Apprentices are an integral part of the production team. They participate in long, varied production schedules. It is not uncommon to work evenings, weekends, and holidays.
Program Responsibilities
- Attend and actively participate in classes and workshops related to technical theatre.
- Attend and participate in weekly professional and personal development workshops.
- Participate in on-the-job training under a journeyman on technical equipment.
- Collaborate with the technical team to support with, but not limited to, special events (internal and external), Center presented productions, visiting productions, and resident companies.
- Attend weekly logistics and production meetings to learn about pertinent information, with staff discussing challenges with upcoming performances.
- Assist with production load-ins and loadouts.
- Take initiative and actively engage in tasks. Anticipate needs, solve problems, and contribute positively to the team.
- After each shift, complete journal entries, keep track, and document the on-the-job training hours and related technical instruction hours.
- Understand how important it is to work within Health and Safety rules.
Qualifications
- Eligible to work in the US
- A strong interest in the performing arts and LIVE entertainment
- Excellent communication skills with an ability to engage with diverse audiences.
- Basic writing skills for documentation and reflection purposes.
- A positive attitude and a willingness to learn from feedback and mentorship.
- Previous experience in technical theater is not required.
Physical Demands
- While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently required to stop, reach, stand, walk, lift, pull, push, grasp, communicate, and use repetitive motions.
- While performing the duties of this position, the employee may frequently lift and or move 50 pounds of materials. The position requires the individual to meet multiple demands from multiple people and interact with the public and other staff.
