Job Summary
The System Architecture Engineer will investigate technologies to improve DWDM transmission performance and participate in the design of future generations of Adtran's DWDM system. The engineer will seek innovative technical solutions to reduce the cost of the DWDM system, while meeting the requirements for distance and capacity set forth by our customers.
Duties and Responsibilities
- A major responsibility will be to study and quantify the impact of different transmission impairments (including fiber and equipment-induced impairments) on the DWDM system performance.
- The candidate will be required to set up prototype opto-electronic circuits (e.g. transmitters, receivers) and conduct specific tests to measure the performance of the prototype circuits under different transmission conditions.
- The candidate will develop test automation software, as needed, to ensure efficient use of time and equipment and improve measurement accuracy. SW tools such as MATLAB or Python will be used for data processing.
- The candidate will also complement experimental studies with network simulations using fiber-optic transmission SW such as RSoft or VPI.
- The candidate will develop algorithms for estimation of transmission impairments and engineering rules for deployment of DWDM systems based on results obtained through lab tests, simulations, and analytical calculations.
- The candidate will describe and document the results of the studies performed on new transmission technologies or on existing Adtran opto-electronic circuits (written documentation or visual presentations for internal communication, or for customer interactions).
- The candidate is also expected to develop new ideas into patents, and use relevant new results for conference presentations and scientific journal publications.
- Other projects and assignments may result and be assigned to accommodate the changing needs of the department and the Company.

- Proven track record of successful research activity through journal publications and conference papers in the field of WDM transmission
- Creativity and ability to find innovative solutions to challenges of future DWDM transmission networks
- Effective written and verbal communication skills
- Able to work in the lab with telecom equipment
Preferred Qualifications
- Knowledge of integrated opto-electronic circuits and DSP algorithms for coherent detection of DWDM signals is highly desired
- Eager to learn new skills and can adapt to the fast-changing pace of the telecom industry
