Job Duties/Responsibilities
The Direct Support Professional-DSP, responsibilities pursuant to N.Y.S. Regulations include, but are not limited to the following:
- Serve as an advocate for the rights, needs, and wants of all the individuals.
- Assists the management staff in procuring and maintaining essential support services for the Individuals, i.e.: medical, vocational, etc.
- Provide personal care and assistance to individuals with activities of daily living which may include bathing, dressing, feeding, transferring between locations (for e.g. bed to chair), maintaining hygiene, making beds etc)
- Assists the management staff in procuring all necessary medical care including the following:
- Accompanying the individuals to medical appointments and following established procedures to have pertinent medical information recorded.
- Ensuring that all prescribed medication is obtained and administered according to established
- procedure.
- Maintaining appropriate and accurate medication records.
5. Assists in maintain appropriate records including, but not limited to the following:
- Individual’s personal files, program plans, progress reports and data collection.
- Recording of events and incidents in accordance with departmental systems and established procedure.
6. Observes and follows through on established emergency notification procedures in a manner which always ensures the safety and welfare of all the Individuals.
7. Provides coverage in accordance with staffing schedules established by the Program Manager with the understanding that scheduling changes may be necessary in order to meet the needs of the Individuals and the Program. This may include mandatory overtime.
8. Attends and successfully completes all necessary training programs as mandated by agency and regulatory requirements.
9 . Successfully complete AMAP, CPR/First Aid and SCIP Training within 6 months.
10. Maintains adequate knowledge level in CPR and AMAP for recertification.
11. Must maintain the care and use of supplies, equipment, etc. and maintain the appearance of the facility.
12. Any other functions that the Residential Program Manager/Supervisor may deem necessary for the health, safety and well-being of the Individuals.

Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED;
- Preferable experience working with individuals with developmental/intellectual disabilities
- Drivers License Preferred.
Skills Required:
- Must be able to follow and carry out written and oral instructions.
- Must be able to read, write and speak the English language in an understandable manner.
- Must possess the ability to make independent decisions and handle stressful situations when circumstances warrant such action.
- Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds
- Must possess the ability to deal tactfully with the Individuals, Personnel, Family Members, Visitors, Government agencies and the General Public.
- Must be willing to work harmoniously with professional and non-professional personnel.
- Must have the ability to implement the programs, goals, objectives, policies, procedures, etc. of the Residential Services Department.
- Must have the patience, enthusiasm and be able to handle the Individuals based on the level at which they are currently functioning.
