Court Reporter

Cleveland.com and The Plain Dealer aim to hire a dogged, creative reporter who can discover fascinating human stories inside the Cuyahoga County courthouse.

The ideal candidate will understand the legal system and legal documents, such as lawsuits, indictments and court orders. The reporter will develop sources and wade through the voluminous court docket to find stories with the most impact, translating legal jargon into compelling human stories.

We are looking for a reporter who is passionate about journalism and enjoys working with a team to develop news stories, investigations and enterprise, but who also knows how to deliver breaking news quickly and accurately.

We offer a newsroom where reporters are encouraged to innovate and pitch their ideas, editors work closely with reporters and talented journalists are willing to collaborate. The ideal candidate will have a competitive instinct and thrive on breaking news with exclusive and impactful stories.

The base salary range is $55,000 to $60,000 per year.

The ideal candidate will have :

• A minimum of three years of journalism experience with a proven ability in reporting and writing.
• A degree in journalism, communications, political science or a related field preferred, or equivalent experience.
• A proven ability to develop sources, including in the criminal justice system and law enforcement
• Strong reporting and writing skills
• An ability to cut through legal jargon and produce clear copy
• An ability to handle deadline pressure
• Solid social media skills
• This job requires reliable transportation to meet with sources and cover events.
