The reporter will be responsible for:
- Regular, audience-focused reporting on Mobile, Alabama, the state’s second-largest city with a culturally diverse 300-year history – a place where Mardi Gras is an annual celebration, the food scene is a seafood lover’s paradise, and the music scene is lively. Its proximity to the beaches and the river delta known as America's Amazon provides for a plethora of opportunities for outdoor adventure. It’s also a region known for its emerging steel, aerospace, and shipbuilding industries, international commerce via the state’s largest port, and the growth and growing pains in Baldwin County, one of the fastest growing counties in the United States and where most Alabama beaches are located.
- Developing expertise in topics Mobile cares about: government accountability, population growth and change, public safety, music and arts, business, transportation infrastructure, beaches and tourism, and the aspirations and challenges inherent in a manufacturing hub and port city like Mobile.
- Using metrics to inform content choices and better understand reader interests
- Experimenting with story topics and styles to better serve the audience
- Seeking out and engaging with a variety of sources to fully represent the people in our communities
You should apply if you have:
- A degree in journalism or communications or equivalent education in another field with relevant skills
- A minimum of three years of journalism experience with a proven ability to write engaging copy that’s clear and accurate.
- The ability to present information clearly and quickly and to frame information with reader impact in mind
- A willingness to relocate to the Mobile, Alabama metro area
- The ability to plan, work independently and prioritize tasks
- The ability to meet deadlines and manage multiple projects
- The ability to work collaboratively within and across teams
- A focus on finding news readers need to know or want to know
- Flexibility to adjust to changes – in technology, procedure and process
- The determination to keep learning on the job and to keep getting better in the job
- A working knowledge of AP style
- The ability to analyze data and procure public records
- Experience working with video and social media
