Pharmacy Technician assists Pharmacists in providing drug distribution, technical services and clinical services associated with the preparation, storage and dispensing of pharmaceuticals.
Job Duties and Responsibilities
- Prepares unit-dose medications specific to patient needs including patient’s weight, allergies, and age (pediatric, neonate, adolescent, adult, and geriatric). Retrieves and delivers inpatient medication orders and supplies.
- Prepares sterile products utilizing aseptic technique and USP 797 standards (to include the preparation, handling and disposal of bio-hazardous drugs).
- Communicates effectively with other pharmacy employees, healthcare professionals, and patients while appropriately recognizing age (pediatric, neonate, adolescent, adult, and geriatric).
- Maintains adequate drug inventories in pharmacy areas and patient care areas and notifies the appropriate personnel when shortages and/or outages noted.
- Performs quality assurance/improvement audits.
- Maintains a neat clean and organized work area.
- Adheres to internal controls and reporting structure.
- Assists pharmacists in filling ambulatory prescriptions specific to patient needs including patient’s weight, allergies, and age (pediatric, neonate, adolescent, adult, and geriatric).
- Assists in record keeping activities in any assigned area.
- Demonstrates the spirit of the philosophy, mission, and values of the hospital through words and actions and implements them into departmental processes, programs, and the working environment.
- Applies the principles and values of customer service and continuous quality improvement while performing day to day activities of the position.

Qualifications
Education
- High School Diploma or GED; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Completion of an accredited Pharmacy Technician program required
Certification, Licensure
- Current certification as a Pharmacy Technician from the State of Texas required.
- IV Certification is required.
- BLS Certification is required.
Experience
- One (1) year related experience and/or training, preferably in a hospital setting.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Excellent organizational skills. Excellent writing and composition skills. Must type 50-60 wpm. Excellent computer, word processing, database, and credentialing software skills.
